We started hiking right after sunrise, and it was beautiful. Keep in mind at this high elevation, it is cold in the morning and the UV index is pretty extreme. Bring a coat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. The hike isn't too strenuous, but again, elevation plays a factor and makes it more challenging. Worth the trip!

Breathtaking scenery! Feels like another planet! Be prepared and bring a coat and dress in layers, especially if you plan to hike. We did about 8 miles out and back, took 3 hours, 2500 elevation gain https://strava.app.link/oQj9bHrkxHb - must do! Started at 4pm - got back to the parking lot at 7pm. Return was cold 40F and very windy. Make sure you go to KaLu'uoka O'o Cinder Cone it is so beautiful and not sure why it was closed for no reason. Parking: You can easily find parking spots at the visitor center or right at the trailhead (8-10 spots)

Beautiful scenery. Bring a change of clothes, as the weather on Sliding Sands is much hotter than the sunrise from the lookout. No water once you start hiking, so plan ahead. Easy to follow trails. We did about 5 miles out and back (10 total), took 4 hours. Next time well through hike it! Parking: Upper parking lots fill up first thing. Restrooms: Minus the big rush right after sunrise, restrooms are adequate.

We only walked the first mile of this trail. I was surprised that you don't actually "slide" but you can hike like any other trail (except it's very cold).
