We lived there for a year we were planning to leave at the end of our 6-month lease but had to renew it because our senior dogs were sick and passed away. The 2 employees (manager, maintenance worker) are good people, but the owner indulges in bad business practices. There are many things that are in a state of disrepair. I think the owner has an extra reason not to get them fixed so he can apply for government grants. Below are a few things to consider: 1) The apartments are overpriced for their location. 2) One entire building and half of another building were completely broken down and unoccupied forever. They were home to many critters but it seems that there are no health inspections in this small town. 3) Eventually when they started construction, they dragged it for months leaving residents exposed to construction noise and dirt. Construction was ongoing at the time we left. 4) The stairs are made of rusted metal and could crumble under someones weight. In winter, the metal collects ice and becomes extremely slippery. If an accident happens, medical services are limited in this small town. Any ambulance ride to Reno or Las Vegas would be very costly. 5) If you get a downstairs apartment, youll be exposed to insects, including Mormon crickets. You might find dog poop right outside your door since the common areas are left unclean. 6) Often, the garbage cans have open or missing lids and gather smell and flies. Thats an issue if you get an apartment close to one of them. 7) There is a sewage collecting area to the west of the apartment complex. Although its far away, there is nothing except a cemetery in between, so occasionally, you get the smell from there. 8) The apartments are small, and even though the contracts (and probably the building code) prohibit large dogs, they allow big dogs so they can fill more apartments. Naturally, the dogs get depressed in those small apartments and bark day and night. 9) The refrigerator and oven in most apartments are old/recycled, so they might add to your electric bill. 10) My experience has been that they dont respect their own contracts. They didnt return my pet deposit saying that it was a non-refundable pet fee. The owner agreed that it was written as a pet deposit on the lease, NOT a non-refundable fee, yet kept my money. Besides the apartment, you might want to consider if Tonopah is the right town to move to. We made the mistake of moving in a rush without checking anything. 1) Some people get health issues because of Tonopahs elevation and weather. Unfortunately, you wouldnt find out until after staying here for a few weeks. 2) Everything from groceries to even gas is overpriced here because of lack of options. Even getting a car service done is a hassle. The closest McDonalds is 100 miles away. 3) If youre a young person, there is hardly anything to do. 4) If youre a senior, access to healthcare is a huge issue. Even one ambulance ride to Reno or Las Vegas would bankrupt you. 5) If youve pets, I think a veterinarian spends one day every 2 weeks here and overcharges for services. Its a long, one-lane highway to Vegas or Reno. 6) If youre a lady who lives alone, this apartment is on the edge of the town, next to the highway, and in the middle of nowhere. One side flanks a cemetery and 2 sides have nothing but open land. 7) Although its a small town, Tonopah doesnt have a small town feel because so many people are transitory.
