I've been working with Adam and Libertas for about a year now - and all I can say is I sooo wish I had started working with them sooner. After working with a couple investment advisors for last 20-30 years who also happened to be family friends, the decision to switch was "tough" but necessary when their proactive guidance and responsiveness to questions stopped after I retired. Working with Adam has been a real eye-opener in regards to what a financial planner can offer . . . . From the discovery meetings exploring my goals, interests, and investment strategy "comfort level", to examining my current investments against those points, to expanding beyond just managing investments to a comprehensive financial planning approach - and through it all consistent, regular communication. If you are facing the same difficult decision to switch from your current investment manager to a firm with a more involved, proactive, comprehensive approach - I can't recommend Adam and Libertas highly enough. I thanked my former advisors for all their help in building my retirement savings, but explained that now that I'm retired I find I need a more comprehensive approach to financial planning beyond just investments, and ongoing advice as things change over time. That approach helped ease the transition - and I haven't looked back for a second.

I wont bury the lead here: Adam and his team at Libertas are excellent and you will be well-served hiring them. But allow me to explain why I say that. There are two super important things you need to know when hiring a financial planner. 1. That they are working in your best interest. One unfortunately pretty common thing in this industry is that almost anyone can call themselves a financial advisor. This includes people who receive extremely large commissions and fees for getting you to put your money in any given investment vehicle. Where do you think that money comes from? Thats right, it comes from the hard earned money you put in those investments. If someone ever tells you, dont worry, you dont pay me, I get paid by company X or Y, run, not walk the other way. (yes I think this should be illegal.) If you arent paying someone a straight hourly fee or a fee based on the assets they manage for you, it is more than likely you are being taken advantage of. There are terrible investments out there that pay these so-called advisors big money to capture your current and future retirement savings. You want your interests and the advisors interests to be aligned, and that means you should always be with a company who has a fiduciary duty to act in your best interest. Not all fiduciaries are created equal, but it is the very minimum qualification you need. 2. Make sure you get the information, education, planning, and services you need from someone you hire. If you are looking just for index funds and ETF management, you can be reasonably served with very low cost robo advising services. But a good advisor offers so much more. Below are some great reasons to consider Libertas. Adam and his team at Libertas spend a long time getting to know you, your family, and your goals before you even sign on with them. I do consulting as a side business, and I will tell you that a mark of a solid professional is one that seeks to understand their customer and customers problem space before they offer any solution. How will you know if you are saving enough for retirement if you dont have a solid understanding of how much money you might need or want to spend in retirement? For me, the emphasis on solid evaluation of current and future spending wants and needs was one of the early signs that Libertas had the right philosophy to help us with our money. Theyll meet with you on a schedule that works for you to adjust your plan, update the projections on what you would have in retirement given various market outcomes, etc. One major benefit to having a professional do this work is eliminating the need for you to get emotional about the market swings; if you are 20 or 30 years away from retirement you wont need this money for a long time so it doesnt pay to get worried about something you cant control anyway. Although I personally have a reasonably solid grasp of finance and retirement investment options, planning for a secure future for my family in the event something were to happen to me was a priority for me after the birth of my first child. I wanted to know that I was working with someone that would be there to help my wife and son not have money worries if something were to happen to me. It is a comfort to know that at the worst time in their lives, money wont be the thing that they have to worry about. Beyond that, Adam and the team are there to answer more mundane questions about recommendations for tax accountants, insurance, and anything else you might want to ask them. I could go on, but I encourage you to setup an intro call and decide for yourself if they are right for you.
