I had a very good experience setting up DC driver's insurance with Irma after I moved here from out of state. She was very helpful, informative, and patient.

Irma Mendoza is a superb agent. She really went to bat for me on a claim and got immediate results.

Very unprofessional and irresponsible. I called Crystal to find out whether they could help me with transferring my policy or, failing that, writing a new one. They put me through to Margie, the owner, who told me they could. I asked if I could speak to the agent who would represent me before I came on board, and she said that Irma would call me the following week for a conversation. Almost four weeks later, when I had heard nothing from them, I called back to see what was going on. Margie told me she hadn't even started to follow up on transferring my policy, and that she had asked Irma to call me, but apparently Irma let it drop. Margie said she should have checked Irma had called me but she hadn't. Margie said it was because they were having problems because they were expanding, said she took responsibility, and asked if I would be willing to continue with the company. When I said it depended on whether this was just a hiccup, because those happen, or if I could expect their expansion to cause similar problems in the future, she started complaining about her personal problems (which she did on our first phone call, as well) and acted snappish with me that she wouldn't be able to absolutely guarantee things would go smoothly in the future. When I told her that waiting on her had delayed my progress on solving the problem with my policy for almost a month and said that I wish I had been given better information about what to expect - since she knew they were growing and might have predicted the delays - or had at least gotten a quick phone call at some point checking in with me and letting me know about the delay, she started complaining about how much work and trouble transferring my policy would be. She knew what was involved with transferring the policy the first time I called her, she said she would be willing do it, she hadn't even started on it, and now almost a month later she was whining about how much trouble it would be? (I did not say any of this to her, just thought it.) Then she got personal, implying that, since I was transferring my policy, I must be part of the problem. I'm not picky about insurance agents, and until this year, I haven't had any trouble finding one. I stayed with my very first insurance agent (who I think was the one my realtor recommended) for about ten years when I lived in a different state. When I moved to DC, I easily found a new one who I stayed with until he retired. I didn't think I would have trouble finding a third competent insurance agency. Although Margie originally said she took responsibility, her total failure to do the work she told me she would do for me and complete lack of follow-up was, apparently according to her, the fault of the insurance company's guidelines, my fault, her daughter's fault, and the fault of her company's expansion. She clearly didn't think it was her responsibility to be aware of the realities of her company, the issues her expansion might cause, and communicate with clients accordingly. I'm kind of glad I had this experience at the outset so I didn't end up signing on with these deeply unprofessional people who are wrapped up in themselves, shirk responsibility, and don't care about the service (or lack thereof) their clients receive.

Crystal Insurance stood with me as I started a business during the pandemic. Although we began as a small company, the team at Crystal Insurance always gave us respect and attention. Their advice and care made overwhelming decisions manageable, and we received extra time and generous support when making decisions outside the normal scope of an insurance advisor relationship. I highly recommend the team at Crystal Insurance to all small businesses and especially to entrepreneurs from marginal communities.
