After touring the building while looking for a new home, I have to say I found the place disappointing. First, the reality did not match the glowing descriptions posted on websites and in reviews. For example, the lobby may have all the original marble floors, but the moulding was merely painted wood. Trompe loeil may be a classic, often used, and even respected way to upgrade the appearance of cheaper materials (and has been used in many historic sites) but I dont appreciate someone claiming first that its marble when its obviously not and second that they never, ever had any idea it was anything other than what they told me. The original flooring in the halls and units should have been replaced years ago as it was cracked and worn, looking dirty and dated not antiquated. Apartments were cramped and dark, partly due to the choice of cabinet and counter finishes. In fact, everything was on a smaller scale than website images implied. Hallways were narrow, and I could foresee serious issues trying to move in furniture through the passageways as well as having to make special arrangements to reserve parking spaces for moving trucks. The art gallery was a hallway where tenants could hang their art for sale. Worst of all was the view out the window from the lower apartments, of a large number of homeless people lounging on the sidewalks across the street. Not something I want to have to look down on, or walk past, every day of my tenancy.

If you are looking for an apartment in Des Moines--look no further!! The manager and staff are the best I have worked with: caring, considerate, and VERY professional. The building is gorgeous and always kept immaculate. The apartments are beautiful and spacious with numerous amenities for a downtown community! If my career ever brings me back to DSM, I know I will be calling Angela!

talk about a top notch place, the apartments are stunning and in a great location. Angela, the manager, is amazing to deal with. She goes above and beyond on any of our needs. I can't express enough my gratitude. Seamless as possible. Angela gets you in contact with everyone needed in order to make your move as painless as possible. I would HIGHLY recommend The Equitable Building and Angela! A HUGE THANK YOU!!!

Reasons I love living at the Equitable Building: 1) The building Manager is the reason the Equitable Building and living community is successful & thriving. Our Manager goes above and beyond to create a wonderful living experience. 2) In my opinion our building manager has created the ultimate downtown Des Moines living situation. 3) Our building manager fosters a diversity of cultures and facilitates the massive new influx of people - young & old - to Des Moines. It's impressive to see. 4) It is a unique experience to live in a 1920's building with all the newest, latest, and greatest technology upgraded during the renovation of 2016. It is coupled with the spirit of the original marble, & Terrazzo Flooring. It is distinguished, efficient, & convenient. 5) I have lived in many places: Iowa, Colorado, Oxford England, Italy, & New York City... I have not had a better experience than the Equitable Building in Des Moines. 6) It is super safe, always clean, and literally located in the heart of downtown Des Moines. 7) In my opinion, due to our building manager and the forward thinking owners: We have the Privledge to live in the pinnacle of excellence. Respectfully, Burgess
