Roto-Rooter was . . . lying? I asked the plumber Id hired for a second opinion. Scare tactics. They work off commission. So this wont cost $15,000? Nope. $2,600. When our kitchen sink quit draining, we called Roto-Rooter. Within hours, a drain technician, Dan, arrived. Before setting to work, he asked we sign a liability waiver soin the event he broke somethingthe company could not be held accountable. Feeling uneasy but assuming this was standard industry practice, we agreed. Less than a minute into snaking the drain, Dan declared hed hit dirt, meaning the sewer line was broken. He told us a camera technician would arrive shortly to assess the extent of the damage and provide an estimate. A young man named Alex appeared at our door the next day. As I escorted him to the kitchen, he told us there was no need to scope our system because hed seen this hundreds, thousands of times. Sight unseen, he informed us our entire sewer system was on the brink of collapse and we hadat bestsix months to make the repair. He warned, under no circumstance, were we to use the downstairs facilities. After explaining at least 30 feet of our finished basement floor would need to be excavated, Alex removed the basement toilet to determine whether it had modern PVC lines or original pipes. Not having laid anything down to protect the floor, he set the toilet to the side, smearing gooey toilet sealing wax into the carpet, which he then stepped in, creating a greasy mess throughout our home. Adding insult to injury, unable to steady the toilet as he tried setting it back in place, Alex bent both mounting bolts. He estimated the repairs would cost $15,000. We told him we would speak to our insurance company. No need, he jutted out. Most insurers dont cover sewers and, even if they do, we dont deal with them. We do have financing available though. If you qualify, I can have a crew out here tomorrow. He then explained two entire walls would need to be removed before adding he owned a contracting business on the side and would be more than happy to do the necessary cosmetic repairs once the sewer was done. All the while, Alexs phone kept ringing. Answering Yes boss each time, on the third occasion, a voice on the other end asked, You got the job yet? I told Alex we would think things over. He assured us hed stop by to replace the toilet mounts. We contacted our insurance agent. She stated she needed documentation to begin the claim. We told her we hadnt been given any and gave her Alexs number. Later that evening, a Roto-Rooter van pulled into our driveway. Out stepped Sam, who announced he had an order to repair a toilet mount. Having had enough and deciding to call his bluff; I texted Alex, requesting his bosss name. He never replied. After scheduling another plumbing company for a second opinion (and to get documentation), a technician arrived. Without having me sign a waiver, he walked past the kitchen. I told him that was where the drain was clogged. He stated the line ran straight down for ten feet andin order to get the proper amount of torque to clear the linehe needed to be were the problem was. Starting at the basement floor drain and working his way back to the kitchen drain, he confirmed the line break. The plumber estimated it would cost $2,600 to repair and would require a 5-foot section of floor be removed. We asked if the situation was an emergency. He chuckled. No. Your kitchen sink still drains, just slowly. The upstairs bathroom runs out on a separate line. I cleaned your main line and the water now sets lower, which means its open. Its fine. Can we use the basement bathroom? Of course. We then told him what Roto-Rooter had said and done. Scare tactics, he replied. They work off commission. I showed him the wax stains on the carpet. He rolled his eyes. All downstairs bathrooms in the area have PVC because they were put in after 1970. This meant Alex and his boss were not only running a scam, they didnt know what they were doing. Do not recommend.
