In early 2021, I was looking for a company to do my taxes. My husband had just died, it was COVID time, I had lost all kinds of work, and he had left me with mostly debt and bad memories. I was desperate, and I had never done my taxes before--he insisted on doing it all. Anyway, a friend recommended this place, and I trusted that friend, so I enlisted Mazzola to do my taxes. Big mistake! Perhaps because they mostly do business taxes, they aren't on top of all the myriad regulations that pertain to individuals? Number one, I had never received my second stimulus payment. There are well published ways to handle this, which include checking off line #30 on your tax return to get the credit for it. Mazzola fought me for weeks on this saying they had "taken classes on the IRS" and knew the law on this and didn't want to go to tax court/jail because of me, and left me wondering if they thought that I was lying so I could bilk the government for $600? It wasn't until I was forced to arrange a 3-way call with the IRS and the nice lady on the IRS call explained to Mazzola, for 25 minutes, that this was the way to do this. Only then did Mazzola FINALLY agree to check line #30 on my tax returns so I could get the credit for the stimulus check that I never received. They didn't believe me! And was a bit snarky about it, as well. Although, I must add that Mazzola gave me a 10% credit on my final bill as a "courtesy." (UPDATE: I just received my $600 stimulus check from the US Treasury) Another thing that happened: a tax-preparer friend of mine investigated that I could actually file as HOH, instead of married, filing singly, because of a number of circumstances in my situation. When filing that way, I would receive a much larger return, which is nothing to sneeze at, since I am the sole breadwinner now that my husband has died. When I shared this with Mazzola, they again cited their history of education on this and told me to "reach out to your senator friend and ask him." In general, I feel that I have been treated discourteously by the principal at Mazzola. I would never recommend this business to anyone. However, I am grateful that I had this experience, since I now know a lot more about what to expect from a tax professional and what a real tax professional looks like.
