Laura is an Enrolled Agent - is a tax expert - especially regarding trusts.  Many years ago, she had helped us and I'd found her to be ethical and efficient.  She did excellent work and was very fairly priced.  In the years since, we'd been doing our own taxes.  Last year, we got a letter from the IRS regarding a problem with a previous tax return (done by us). They thought we owed them money.  I could tell, by the info in the letter, that there was an inconsistency that didn't make any sense (indicating the IRS was likely mistaken), but I couldn't understand their terminology, or why they thought there was an issue.  In their letter, they clearly state (multiple times) you are welcome to ask questions of the IRS, research the issue, etc.  However, if you take too much time and don't pay up by their deadline, then you will incur large fines on top of what you owe.  They are obviously trying to scare you into just paying what they are asking for, instead of questioning/researching it for yourself.  I was unimpressed with their approach.  As a point of principal, and also because my hunch was they were wrong, I skedaddled straight to Laura.  She saw the IRS' error immediately, drafted a letter to respond to the issues (pointing out their multiple, inconsistent errors) and we wound up not paying an additional cent to the IRS, because we'd filed accurately in the first place.  Her fee for this was extremely fair and well worth the time and headache(s) of trying to understand or deal with the IRS ourselves. You could not be in better hands.
