Our parlor level at 49 E 10th was an antique store in the early 90s. Some of the abandoned inventory – such as the spectacular chandeliers of Venetian glass – can still be seen in our office.

Be very careful to ask questions and then double check documents. Tonight we met Paul Rosen of Corcoran to view a Brooklyn apartment listed on Trulia as $2,063. We found the experience to be incredibly misleading, and the agent we met at the property was outright fraudulent. Rent was actually $2,250, not the $2,063 that is listed. This was not too odd for us, and we understand it is a commonly used tactic. But we also EXPLICITLY asked about deposit and application details (both brokers fee and application fees) and we were told point blank that it would only require passing a credit check (no fee) and paying the first month's rent—with him begrudgingly referencing that the law had changed to make it this simple. We were surprised because we’ve lived in NYC for over 6 years and have never known this to be true. He reaffirmed this to be the case. We then got an application document saying it would be 1 month security ($2250) + first month rent ($2250) + $85 applicant fee (x2 for me and my girlfriend) + a $3712.50 broker fee. We emailed to compare this against what we were told in person and he apologized if there was a “miscommunication.” All told, that is $6,319.50, or just over 3 times, more than we were told it would cost when we found the listing. This is misleading at best and predatory at worst for new apartment-hunters in New York. Beware of this broker firm. Ask lots of questions. Get confirmation. Read every word of what you’re sent.
