I appreciate the time and care the staff and Dr. Douglas put into my elderly dog. She had surgery 3/6 and is 18 years old. She is happier and feisty than ever.

Had to have our 10 year old cats leg amputated on Friday, March 22nd. We brought her in around 7:30 am. We were told we could pick her up after 4 that evening. We were told to keep her warm. We brought her home and put her on a heated pad. She passed away after 1 hour being home. Please get a second opinion before an amputation. I was also told by other sources that she should have stayed there and been watched longer after a major surgery. Sorry, but after this very sad experience for our family. We will not be bringing any more of our animals here. THIS WAS A MAJOR SURGERY SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN WATCHED LONGER. VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED

Hi David, First and foremost, please accept our deepest condolences for the loss of your kitty. Our pets are members of our families, and we know the pain of losing one is profound. It’s clear from your review that this has been an extremely difficult time for your family. We do not take this lightly, and we are so sorry for the distress you’re feeling surrounding the events of the last week. I really appreciate you taking the time to chat with me regarding Ms. Kitty’s surgery and post-surgical care on Monday. All of us here at DOMAH take the health and well-being of our patients seriously. We love the pets we care for. Our doctors and staff understand the gravity of all anesthetic procedures, especially those that include life-saving measures like amputation from an injury like your kitty had. We would never rush a patient home from any procedure, let alone a major surgery. Ms. Kitty stayed with us as long as we had a doctor in the building to oversee her medical care. I have taken time to carefully review the medical records and have spoken with Dr. Vargas directly about the details of her procedure. The notes he made on the day of the surgery confirm that while discussing post operative care with your family Dr. Vargas did strongly recommend, on two separate occasions, that Ms. Kitty be transferred to an emergency hospital after leaving our clinic for overnight monitoring. Our notes also indicate that your family declined this recommendation for reasons we will not share in this response. We understand that there are many considerations that go into making decisions for a pet’s medical care and we do our best to walk families through all options. We apologize if the doctor’s recommendation to transfer for overnight care was not clear or if by chance it seemed insufficient at the time. Please know that these suggestions were made with Ms. Kitty’s best interest in mind and only aimed to provide her with the most attentive post-operative care available during the critical hours following her surgery. This is the standard of care we believe every patient deserves. As we discussed earlier in the week, Dr. Vargas and Dr. Daniels are happy to take some time to talk with you here at the office or over the phone to discuss what might have led to Ms. Kitty’s passing. We are wholly committed to clarity and transparency when it comes to our patients and their families. It’s immensely important to us that every pet owner understands their pet’s treatment plan and feels confident in the care they received with our team. We are here to listen and will try to help in any way we can. Please feel free to reach out at your convenience and know that we are so deeply sorry for your loss. Your family, and sweet Ms. Kitty, are in our thoughts. --Lani Kasica, Practice Manager 205-991-5446
