Initially, built-in 1905, Sullivan Roadhouse is the oldest, still standing structure in Interior Alaska. Its previous location along the Valdez-Fairbanks Trail south of Fairbanks was no longer accessible, so it was relocated and restored. This place existed when there were no roads for cars; people usually traveled in the winter and employed dogs and horses. The traveler going to Fairbanks or back to Valdez would stop and find food, lodging, and company at the roadhouse. Today by car, it takes eight hours. Back then, it could take weeks to make the trip. The building was relocated to Delta Junction to preserve it. I like the Christmas lighting of the Sullivan Roadhouse each year, done by volunteers.
