This is a great place to hike or even just to relax. Very quiet and uncrowded. The facilities are primitive (vault toilet, no water) but have been clean every time I've visited. The Secret Canyon Trail is well maintained and easy to walk/hike. If you'd like, you can walk all the way to Horsethief Canyon 14 miles away. This would be a good starter backpacking trip too, especially if you did it as a point-to-point by leaving a vehicle at the other end or getting dropped off/ picked up. There is plenty of water in the creek so you don't have to carry a lot (but make sure to treat it, as there are cows in the area). Watch for ticks - we found several crawling on our dogs (but they didn't get bitten since they're on preventatives). This is a dog-friendly area and since it's National Forest, they're allowed off-leash as long as they're within voice control.

I'm not sure I want to say this as this place is a little know secret. Nestled in the eastern San Diego count, it has a wonderful easy hike thru the hills. There is a small hike to a secret lower canyon, but you need to be dressed in case of contact with rattlers! Long pants and boots would be good. I was wearing shorts so did not go down that path. Future hike for sure.
