When I first came to The Home Church I thought I had finally found the right church for my family. However this church does not have accommodations for special needs children and my son is autistic. I did take my son to the children's church, along with my other two boys. But when I went to pick them up he had been separated from all the other children and was alone with an aide on the playground in the back of the building. This made me uncomfortable given my son is autistic and non verbal. A lady had also mentioned that they have had some autistic children attend before, but they do not have anyone who specializes in special needs. I decided to come back again and try to see if my son would sit through the sermon, because there are times when he will. Unfortunately he had gotten over stimulated and started to cry. There was an older couple in front of us who kept turning back and giving me very dirty looks. So I took my son, and walked out to the hallway. As I was leaving the Pastor had also said that there was a daycare. The tone and way he had said it just didnt sit very well with me. And quite frankly it did embarrass me given how many people were there and that he said it aloud in front of everyone in the middle of the sermon. Now, with that being said I understand that the reason they have a children church is because of instances such as this. And Im sure that they just want everyone to be able to hear Gods message, and do not want children distracting others who came to hear the word of God. But as a mother of a special needs child, I dont feel theres very much support here for those with disabilities.
