image My brother and I stayed at the Sleepy Creek Ranch this past weekend to participate in the California Fish and Game SHARE program hunt. We are public land hunters and couldnt dream of the quality of accommodations provided on the ranch. Totally off the grid with solar power and no AC I was a bit skeptical of how comfortable it could be when its 90 degrees outside. Being used to hot weather and outdoor camping in the back country we figured anything would be a luxury compared to the type of hunting we usually do, so we booked it. Bonnie knows how to control the temperatures during the night and day and we were comfortable from the time we went to bed to the time we woke up. It was cool inside during the afternoon and very comfortable. From the minute communication began with Bonnie it was amazing. The ranch house is quaint in appearance from the outside which was great for us. Then you walk inside and the decor and style of the home take on a museum type feel. Every wall and table decorated with Native American and Old Country themes. It felt like taking a step back in time with all the modern amenities of home. Cell reception was reliable, internet 3g for me on Verizon. Beds were super comfortable and the Ranch definitely has a laid back country feel to it. Bonnie herself was an amazing host, showing us the property boundaries and coordinating our meal times to fit our schedule. I would highly recommend spending the extra $30 for the home cooked meals, they were a real treat. Bonnie stayed up til after 9pm to feed us after long days of hiking. We woke at 4am with hot coffee and an offering of breakfast burritos to go or a sit down breakfast when we returned. All and all the experience at Bonnies Ranch was one to remember and I would highly recommend anyone who enjoys the outdoors to book a stay.

image We were on our search for central California wildflowers, in this banner year. Wanted a couple of nights near Carrizo Plain, but not in the urban areas around Paso Robles. And came upon Sleepy Creek Ranch using Google Maps. We spent two nights with Bonnie Goller, who owns and runs the Ranch. A professional archeologist, she has explored most of the area, and has deep knowledge of, and personal experience with, Chumash tribal cave art, and Native American history and ways of life in the central California region, from the Channel Islands to well-inland.
We opted to pay $25 each extra per night, for dinner, and salmon and Santa Maria try-tip from her grill. Brought and shared some of our own wine, but she has plenty on-site.
The ranch is off the grid, but all amenities are outstanding. Three guest rooms are appointed luxuriously. Plenty of indoor and outdoor lounging and roaming areas. Plenty of reading material for an extended stay. TV and videos if you wish, but we didn't find the need.
Bonnie had topo maps, and took us down to the creek, from where we went off on about a four-mile mostly ridgeline hike, mostly on Ranch property but some on BLM land, to take in the splendid views of the San Rafael Wilderness in Los Padres NF to the south, and Caliente Ridge (covered in yellow wildflowers) to the north. Later, did another two-mile or so trail, which Bonnie had laid out. The wildflowers were spectacular this year, and in this season. They should be excellent for another three weeks, to mid-April, unless cool weather persists, in which case it will last longer.
