I haven't been to a Shakey's Pizza Parlor in nearly 40 years, and this location in Oroville, CA, is one of only a handful left in the U.S. Now I know why: the food is just okay. It wasn't the worst pizza I ever had, but it was pretty close. The crust was hard, and the overall flavor was pretty bland. Same with the Mojos. They were okay, but the way my wife raved about them, I expected something spectacular. Nope. Just basic, sliced potatoes, fried with a little bit of seasoning. The restaurant was crowded, which didn't surprise me at first, but after eating, I was like, "Why are all these people here?" The counter service was acceptable. A teenager who probably didn't want to be there barely greeted me when I stepped up to the counter, but he took my order competently and was pleasant enough when I asked a question. The atmosphere was okay. A little noisy due to being crowded on a Saturday afternoon, and kids playing the 4 or 5 video games they had. It was a bit nostalgic with all the "Ye olde..." signage on the walls, but there was no honky-tonk piano, and no Three Stooges or Little Rascals playing on the TVs. They had two TVs on, each playing a different sports program. I don't know what I expected. I guess I was hoping for really good pizza and something that would take me back to my childhood, but this place missed the mark. It was worth going once just for the history and nostalgia of the Shakey's of the 70's, but I don't have to go back.
