This incredible historic mansion in red Colorado sandstone, elegantly restored to its Victorian splendor, deserves all the superlatives you will find in the reviews. Built by the first governor of Colorado and later owned by another governor (and then his senator son), the roughly 11,000 square foot house (on an acre of land in the heart of the city) is an architectural masterpiece full of intricate wood carvings and all the funky flourishes the Victorians loved: bays, turrets, beautiful stained glass and a grand staircase flanked by carved griffins. The Koncilja family have done an amazing job, and a wonderful service to the city of Pueblo, in restoring this grand old home to its glory days. I have a personal connection to the house; my father used it as an office along with two other doctors in the 70s and 80s. I have such fond memories of the elegant common spaces, the waiting room full of books in a room-sized turret, and the secret-attic-hideout feel of the third floor. The place is now even better to explore, with several huge and comfortable common areas to accompany the huge and comfortable bedrooms. The restoration is a work in progress; in particular as other reviewers have noted the kitchen is not fully functional - think microwave, fridge, and sink. But serving pizza to 17 people at the 20-foot long table in the golden oak-paneled dining room worked great! And Pueblo has lots of wonderful restaurants I encourage you to explore. The fact that one can spend the night here is amazing; that it is so affordable is icing on the cake. We rented the entire house to put up visiting family. It was a fantastic choice and I am so grateful for the warm hospitality we received. Special thanks to Joe Koncilja who really made us feel so welcome. Check out this storybook mansion next time you are passing through Southern Colorado!
