Attempting to work with a mortgage company outside of the Des Moines area was not a good experience. Humboldt, Iowa was the home's location where we were obtaining a mortgage and the closing day process was less than ideal.
All documentation was "ready" two weeks before closing. Closing was set for 8 am on a Friday. Thursday night at 4 pm we received a note stating the cashier's check needs: who it is written to and the amount. This was tremendously inconvenient due to the bank closing at 4 and not opening till 8:30 am the next day. The closer couldn't make it up to Algona for the closing so we had a notary working with us to get the documents signed. The documents to be signed were not printed, and there was no clear understanding of paper size or details for the notary to look for so that the documents were to the standards needed. While signing the documents, there were incorrect costs that we couldn't approve until they were fixed even though the documents were "finished" two weeks before closing. After all the documents were signed and we were moving into the house, we got a note from our realtor that we had to resign all of the documents. This was after she scanned all of the documents in and then drove all the way down to Des Moines (2 hours) to give them the hard copies. Instead of looking at the scanned documents they waited to look at the hard copies to determine that they were not correctly printed. Our realtor then had to drive back up to Algona (2 hours) to have us resign the documents. A closing which started at 8 am was not finished until 4:30 pm. We then had documents that were asked from us on that next Monday because they still needed documentation before it was truly complete. Overall, this experience was long and unfortunate. I am sure it would have gone smoother if we were able to go into the office in Des Moines. This was a long difficult day especially while managing carpet cleaners, WIFI hook up, and moving into our new home.
