Went for continuous rib dislocation-dr Velez ordered mri-office called to tell me they spoke to my insurance & my cost would be $45. I went ahead with MRI. Received bill & is $500 for MRI & $180 for office visit. This is my deductible. Not close to what I was quoted. MRI showed nothing & Dr. Velez referred me off. Apparently they dont deal with ribs. Should have been told this up front & now Im stuck with huge bill. Verify yourself with insurance what you will owe. Now Im out $700 with no answers. Complete waste of time & money

Pain in my lower back increased after I retired and began to play golf again in May 2019. Toward the end of the season I went to see Dr. Velez and he diagnosed a herniated disk. We reviewed my options and decided on surgery. The procedure was flawlessly performed on January 2, 2020. It's now six weeks later and I just had my final post-op visit; the pain is gone and I couldn't be happier with my decision, with my doctor (and his staff) and with my outcome. I highly recommend Dr. Velez.

I had a back injury in the early 70's while serving with the 82nd Airborne at Ft. Bragg, NC. After the injury I would go long periods of time with no problems, but then I could roll over in the bed wrong, or sneeze the wrong way and wind up incapacitated for several days. Almost 20 years after the initial injury I got knocked down on a concrete floor and landed on my tail bone. The L5 vertebrae chipped and the disc between L5 and S1 herniated causing me extreme pain. I wound up having micro surgery at the time to relieve the pressure from the disc pressing on the nerves in that location. I was 38 at the time. For the next almost 20 years I was again doing well, but in my mid-50's I started having a lot of chronic pain in that area. That is when I first encountered Dr. Velez. He referred me to the pain center there, and for the next 5 or 6 years I got epidurals and ablations with increasing regularity as the disc continued to degenerate. I talked to many people about surgery, and the consensus seemed to be not to do it unless it was absolutely necessary. This was from friends, family, and even people I met who had surgery in the past. So my plan was to put it off as long as possible. Dr. Velez never pressured me to have surgery, but was more than available to talk about the potential issues surrounding surgery, and his own success with them. Then in March of 2019 I was in an accident that aggravated that area and epidurals and ablations provided no relief. So I felt like I had no other options. I scheduled my surgery and Dr. Velez discussed doing what he called an ALIF procedure. That stands for Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion. Anterior means they were going to go in from the front, which was sory of shocking to me, I had never heard of it. On October 15th, 2019 Dr. Velez and the team that he works with performed this surgery on me. When he got into the area he discovered that the damage to that area was actually much more than we had believed it to be. There was no disc material remaining between the two vertebrae, and they had actually started to fuse together with bone growing in between the two. And I had five bone spurs on the back side of L5, which was probably one of the biggest sources of my pain. He chiseled the bone between the L5 and S1 vertebrae, filed down the bone spurs, and inserted a PEEK spacer that was filled with ground cadaver bone mixed with my stem cells. The spacer was held in place with two titanium screws. Then he pulled the tool that was used to restore the normal space between the discs, moved my stomach and organs back into place and used a series of internal stitches and external glue to seal me back up. When I woke up from the surgery, for the first time in many, many years I was pain free!!! The incision hurt like the dickens, but I had zero nerve or back pain. I am now 90 days post op and still do not have any back pain from the nerves being pressed on. One thing I found interesting is that with all of the exercises I was given to to build back up my core muscles and strengthen the muscles in that area, I actually had some sore muscles that I noticed for the first time in a long time. It was almost reassuring to have a "normal" backache. Dr. Velez was so great to work with during the pre surgery time, and he came to see me every day I was in the hospital after the surgery. I could not be happier with the results of the surgery and the care I got from the staff at Resurgens before, during, and after the surgery. It has been nothing short of life changing for me.
