I went to Rake (in June/July) to order new countertops. I asked for a quote for countertops and a backsplash. After the quote, I decided to go with the countertops and have a tile backsplash installed. On installation day they brought countertops AND a backsplash I hadn't ordered. I talked to Rich who asked me if I wanted the backsplash for half off. Not knowing the measurements were off, I said yes. The countertops and backsplash were installed when my contractors were there (I was gone). When I came back that night to look at the counters, I noticed gaps between the cabinets and the backsplash, and the gaps were different sizes on each side. I called to ask wtf and Hillary told me that I was already getting the backsplash for half off, there was no way to fix it, and I should have my contractors add some sort of base molding to the cabinets. That was the beginning. I then noticed both lazy susans wouldn't open because of the weight of the counters. Rake sent technicians to fix this, but the technicians said there was nothing they could do, and I had to talk to the cabinet people. I did not have a problem with the cabinets before the counters were installed and Rafael in the showroom told me the weight of the countertops would not be an issue. The seams were also wrong, but they sent a Russell out to address that (and he did, which was okay). A few weeks later I still had the problem with one lazy susan, but Rake didn't address that. Instead, they brought a small sliver of quartz to fill in the gap where the cabinets meet the countertop. OK, I was thinking this installation may not be perfect, but my god, it wasn't even flush with the rest of the backsplash! When I came out of my office to see how the installers were doing, I saw their van pulling away. No follow up calls, no invoice, no explanation-nothing. Fifty days later (while I am away on business which they couldn't have known, but it was bad timing and it infuriated me), they send some dumb email threatening collections because the balance (they collect 80% up front, so this was the remaining 20% and the $1000 or so for the backsplash which they would have thrown away) was "50 days past due." When I called to ask wtf and why I hadn't heard anything, Hillary told me "Oh, you have the invoice" in the most condescending tone possible. Who doesn't send an invoice when asking for payment?!? Hillary also tried to "shame" me or something by letting me know that SHE always calls the company to pay contractors who come to her house to do work. I told her that I was not an accounting dept. and I am not inclined to pay for bad services. She also defended the shoddy work on the backsplash and told me in a snotty voice "You KNEW they couldn't be perfect!" Um, did I? She also acted like the installers pulled off some death defying stunt by installing the little slivers of quartz. "They could have been injured," said Hillary. Well, then wear PPE or don't agree to the install. Or just comp the backsplash or SOMETHING. Nope. Nothing. I sent my husband in to pay because I was too angry to deal with them and I demanded a zero balance letter (I didn't trust them to register the payment, can't imagine why I didn't trust them-ugh). I paid because I just DID NOT want to deal with them anymore, but I regret settling the balance. I really should have taken them to small claims court, but I didn't want to waste my time over a small amount of money. Oh-she also told me they could come in and tear out the backsplashes (which would ruin the drywall) if I wanted, and she would deduct $1000). Of course I don't want you to further destroy my house, jesus. The conversation with her was full of simpleton childlike ultimatums. That's probably how they get people to pay up for poor quality work: people just don't want to deal with them anymore. Cannot recommend.
