We were referred to Dr Davis by two different veterinarians. The receptionist that called to schedule was very friendly and helpful. We opted to pay $75 more for an emergency time slot because it worked better for our schedule. They actually did call to offer us another non emergency/less expensive appointment, which we really appreciated even though it didnt work for us. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted and the vet tech who performed the tests was nice and made us feel comfortable. She then informed us the resident Dr would be in. We were under the impression that we were seeing Dr Davis and we were never told there was even another option. When I explained that we had two referrals specifically for Dr Davis, the tech went back to ask if Dr Davis could see us. It was a bit awkward bc we could hear the whole conversation! I then felt badly for the resident Dr bc she was aware of the situation and probably felt like we didnt want to see her. The resident was however very nice and she did a thorough examination and then went back to converse with Dr Davis. When she returned she informed us that our little guy needed his eye removed, she said he was in pain & they wanted to do it asap. We explained that we had major concerns bc he is 16 and has kidney disease & also Cushings disease. I asked if they perform surgeries on dogs with these conditions at this age and she said all the time but feel free to discuss it with your vet to see if he is a good candidate for surgery. They also explained that if our dog were to have life threatening issues during surgery that WE would have to transport him to an animal hospital. They did suggest if we preferred to have an animal hospital do the surgery, they would refer us (and we appreciate them sending the referral.) We left feeling very overwhelmed with making a very big decision thinking that eye removal was our one and only option. After discussing with our vet, we scheduled a consult at Purdue since they have a board certified anesthesiologist on staff and a 24 hour hospital, again thinking he needed surgery asap. The hospital setting made us feel more comfortable knowing how risky surgery would be for our dog. We are SO thankful that we listened to our gut and scheduled a second opinion bc after our appointment with Purdue, they informed us that our dogs eye is actually healing and surgery is NOT needed! Bottom line.. if you have concerns, GET A SECOND OPINION rather than feeling rushed into surgery being the only option. Also, if cost is a concern to you.. the Purdue exam was only $195 (vs the $315 (which included the $75 emergency time slot upcharge) but it was still a lesser cost.) I will say it again.. please get a second opinion if you have to option to do so!

Thank you for the feedback. In your pet's case, the eye was perforated with a hole in the center. This is painful and there is not a medical treatment for this. The eye had also been blind for some time, and was causing her pain. We did recommend surgery to alleviate her pain. Our resident, Dr. Latham, is highly trained and qualified. You booked the appointment with her on that day, knowing it was Dr. Latham as the primary clinician. Our values of comfort and vision are important and we do stand behind our recommendations. We also gave you all the options for treatment and aim to be transparent in our standard of care. We do wish you and your pet the best!
