I just had a horrendous experience. Being uninsured made matters worse. I mentioned this both in the phone call and when I arrived. I went into the appointment expecting an extraction. I brought the crown in simply to show them all the bits and pieces of tooth that came out with it. They were still glued to the bottom of the crown. He took an x-ray which I did not want because of cost. It most definitely should have shown the rot and decay of the tooth. After completion of re-glueing the old one back in, he stated that if it comes off again, it would have to be pulled. Well, after 1 month, it did come off. Prior, there was maybe 50% of the upper part of tooth left. This is what initially told me that it would have to be pulled. Now there is maybe 25% as more of it ripped off when the crown came off again. A very poor decision was made after the x-ray to re-glue. When going to pay, I was furious at the $250 cost of regluing!!! I obviously did not want to fork out that kind of dough for a simple regluing procedure. After today's phone call, he will only reimburse me $125 of that if I have bridge work done which will run in the thousands. Extremely upset as it's hurting now because of very little tooth remaining and having spent all of my 2022 budget. Now I'm searching for a new dentist to pull it out which is what I initially wanted and stated on the phone call and upon arriving at this Fort Madison clinic.

We hear and understand your frustration. It is the standard of care to take an X-ray in a situation such as this to determine the health of the root structure and tooth underneath. Dr. can never predict if or when a tooth in this situation will fail. We always communicate this to patients if it is a precarious situation, which as stated in your review, that is what Dr. did communicate. It sounds as though Dr. was trying to buy you more time with the tooth to avoid an extraction and a bridge especially if they were made aware finances were an issue. The $250 cost is not just the recementing of the crown, but also the X-ray and exam required to diagnose the necessary treatment. This is the standard of care for all dental offices as laid out by the American Dental Association guidelines. The $125 that was offered to be reimbursed was the cost of the recementing of the crown. If the tooth were to be extracted the exam and X-ray would still have been included in that cost. Please feel free to call our office if you would like to discuss this further. We do not want to give the impression that we are not holding ourselves to a high standard of care for all of our patients, regardless if they have insurance or not. Thank you!
