Called the owner, Robert (Bob), inquired about a job as i was driving over the road and wanted to be local so i could be home every night. Seemed like a nice guy and company. I told him, up front, that I was looking for a driving job only working 8 to 9 hours and asked if he could use a guy like that. "Bob" said, "I work with all my drivers. Some don't want to work much and some are workaholics", and assured me that I could work the hours I wanted. I put in a two week notice at my job and went to work for him. His son drive tested me and made sure i knew how to operate the end dump, although I did have previous experiences, which is perfectly standard, and ok. That went well! Another driver trained me on two of the locations for half a day and my first day on my own I ran 4.5 loads which is good. There are other drivers that do 4 loads and quit for the day. I drove the truck safely. I was professional, in every way, I performed well, and did a good job. I never spoke to any customers as they are in an office and drivers just drop a ticket into a mailbox. I then went on vacation, as prior to this job a trip was planned months in advance to take my wife to visit her dad, in Canada, who just turned 80 recently. Bob said I did a good job and to have a good vacation and, "I'll see you when you get back". Bob always leaves the loads for the next day in the driver's seat of each truck the night before. After returning from vacation, instead of loads on the driver's seat there was a note saying that, "this is just not working for you" and that my employment was terminated. ??? What!?!?!? This makes absolutely no sense! I have never, ever had any employer do something like this to me. I just spent a lot of my savings for a visit to Canada which included what I saved for my loss of income for taking unpaid time off. Bob knew how many hours I wanted to work and that I had an upcoming vacation PRIOR to hiring me. I have done nothing wrong or deserving of this. However, Bob has put me and my family in severe financial jeopardy, and for no apparent reason except that he can for some alternative reason unbeknownst to me. He simply had the office lady tell me that I was "not a good fit for the company" and did speak to me face to face. Cowardice. Not a good fit!? I worked one day and did everything right! What are you talking about?!? I have done the same great work for Bob as I did for my previous employer driving which is a much larger company with a much bigger reputation. Did someone want to work longer hours to make Bob more money!?? Something is very wrong here! No one has ever treated me like this in my working history! I am 54 years old and have been working full-time since I was 16 years old. I'm a very hard worker. My wife and 8 kids will testify to this and I have good references. This is UNJUST, UNFAIR, UNETHICAL, UNDERHANDED, UNNECESSARY, and UNCALLED for. This company will go to a nonprofit organization which will expose the darkness of this owner, without fail, utilizing the privilege and power of the first amendment, and request a correction of this injustice.
