When I saw Dr. Messina, he told me that every filling I had received in my life (approximately 8) had to be removed and redone. Having had good dentists in the past, I was suspicious but decided to trust him. His office estimated that, with insurance coverage, it would be $200 out of pocket, and my dental plan would cover the rest. I paid. 2 months later, I received a bill for almost $1000 more, in addition to what I had paid at the time. "That was just an estimate," the office said. Some estimate! I asked if there was anything we could work out because their estimate was off by a factor of 6. They said no and threatened to turn me over to a collection agency on my first phone call. What a racket.
