image I received a notification via app that my back left tire on my 6 month old Mercedes with 3500 miles had low tire pressure of 37. Normal is 38, so I wasnt particularly worried. I had surgery on my foot two weeks ago so the car has only been driven once for a doctor visit. When I went to my garage, the tire looked somewhat deflated so I made an appointment for service on the same day. I should mention I 66 years old, blonde and female. My purchasing of this car was the worst auto experience Ive ever had.
By the time I drove mile from my home to the dealer, the tire was flat but not on the rim. I intended to wait for service. After inspecting the tire, my service rep told me the technician said the tire was destroyed, couldnt be fixed and likely also had rim damage. They had to order a tire and parts but would give me a loaner until the car was fixed in a day or two. When I expressed incredulity that a tire on a brand new Mercedes with low mileage that hadnt been driven in over a week could spontaneously and irreparably combust in my closed garage with only a minor warning on an app, I asked for a complete breakdown of the service report with an estimate of my options. I also wanted the tire and rim so I could get a second opinion prior to authorizing the repair. I mentioned that I also had a three year bumper to bumper warranty and repair agreement on the car, thrown in to sweeten the purchase agreement.
Miracles apparently do happen. Lo and behold, the service rep came back and said that it turns out there is a nail puncture, no rim damage and the puncture could be repaired in an hour or so. I said I wanted the nail. Within an hour my keys were in my hand with a properly plumped tire and the car was given a much needed bath. I was given a screw without the head as the culprit and a $0 bill.
Had I not questioned how a top of the line car could fail so miserably and so quickly, and that I intended to seek another opinion, I would have likely incurred thousands of dollars in unnecessary and fraudulent repairs. I remembered that Mercedes service technicians work on commission which was corroborated by two service agents loudly discussing their compensation and significant commission checks while sitting at their desks about 20 feet from where I was waiting.
If you bring your car to the Scarborough, Maine Mercedes dealer for service, be sure to ask a lot of questions and a full breakdown of the costs, with photos as proof. Unless, of course, you are a man because you wouldnt be presumed to be dumb, senile and naive.
