I and my husband have called this location to try to enroll my son with no answer or call back( as they said they would), for months. Very unprofessional

This place has a ton of potential. Unfortunately they seem to be about money at the end of the day. We decided to take our daughter out of school a couple months before school started because of the increase in Covid-19 cases both in MD and in the country. Our reason was to protect our child, our family, our daughters grandparents, the teachers and the wider community. And although many businesses and organizations are bending their policies because of Covid, and are understanding that families are in both a health and financial crisis, HCS refused to refund us even though our daughter did not attend one day or receive anything from HCS. They stated their policy and told us they have a tight budget and needed the money ($567) to buy supplies. So basically they said that they will use OUR money to buy school supplies for their school even though OUR daughter isn't attending. One would think that they'd be sensitive during this time, but instead we were met with them digging their heels in and refusing to refund us, and using our money for their own interests. In doing so they lost us for next year as well as any chance of our younger daughter attending in the future. In the long run they traded ten of thousands of dollars for a few hundred.

I've had two boys - rambunctious boys! - have completely positive experiences at HCS. One is alumni and now in high school. After HCS he first attended another Montessori school through elementary, then transitioned to public high school successfully. My youngest son is currently in pre-school. HCS is exceptional in every way. Not only are the teachers deeply invested in their profession and committed to the children, there are many that have remained with the school for many years - this impresses me to no end because I know the allure of a larger school system must be strong for career teachers, but the HCS staff love their work and become close (appropriately, always!) with the children. It is truly like a family at HCS, with many involved and supportive parents who are readily welcomed by the staff as volunteers and understandably concerned parents. It's hard for some moms and dads to leave their little ones in someone else's hands, and HCS quickly puts parents at ease. The Montesorri system is incredible, evidenced by the many successful figures who are Montessori alumni. Most children quickly become independent and competent in all the right ways. Individual children are given the opportunity to learn at an appropriate pace for their own social and intellectual level, all the while gently encouraged to advance. We love this school, period!

My daughter is finishing her second year at Hagerstown Children's School, and she has learned so much! She has been reading since she turned 4 and can talk with authority about her favorite planets, dinosaurs, and continents.  She is very independent, so the Montessori model of "follow the child" is a good fit for her. This year she began to manifest some struggles with emotional and sensory regulation, and her teachers (Ms. Susan and Ms. Allie) and the staff (Ms, Heather and Ms. Brenda) have been very patient, supportive, and creative as we work on these challenges with them and other caregivers. We are so grateful for their love and concern for her wellbeing, not only now but in preparing her to move into public school for kindergarten. Thank you, HCS!

My first experience with Hagerstown Children's School began when my older son was ready for a Pre-K environment. At that time this was not offered in the public school system. Someone had suggested that I check the Montessori program at HCS. We visited the school and loved it. Our son finished his Pre-K and Kindergarten with HCS. When our next son was getting ready for Pre-K I already knew that I would send him to HCS. The staff encourage the children and treat them as if they were their own. It's refreshing to have a school that is able to allow a child to progress at their own pace. If they are advancing in any area they are encouraged to keep going. If they are struggling, they will work with them and help them master tasks. Each child is given an opportunity to be a helper in the classroom. This allows them to be first in line, help with the weather maps and help the teacher. It's a pretty big deal! My son always wants to get to school on time so that he doesn't miss seeing his name up as a helper. Now that they have moved to their new location, the school is bigger, brighter and the outdoor play area is great. The kids often call it their "park". I would recommend HCS to anyone!
