HL Design contractors were very, very good. We are very pleased with the new backyard paver patio job. We hired David and Cathy Howe to tackle a slope-challenge of installing pavers, river rock outline, and a fence, to cover our whole back yard, with a declined slope. It was a major job!
They were very timely and started the job way quicker than we imagined and Davids team finished the job in 3 days. The work is top-notch. The pavers look very attractive; they decreased the slope to make it a level patio; the river rock is a very nice touch; The fence is looking great!
Davids old-school touch of having a hand-written contract with drawings was different, but it worked! It was very unique! The communication was slow at times, but not bad. There were a couple of pavers that were loose after a week or so, but Davids team came out and fixed them, guaranteeing their work, which was great!
We are very happy. Thanks HL Design Landscaping! We would definitely hire them again for other similar projects.

Totally unprofessional! I was referred to this business by word of mouth. In June, I contacted him to do a small patio in my backyard. He offered a fantastic price, and said he could do it early July. In early July I reached back out to schedule a time for the installation since I hadn't heard from him. He gave me a date of July 20th. When I reconfirmed the DAY before, he said he had to reschedule because he didn't have the pavers. I was frustrated that I had to reach out to him (again) only for him to reschedule. When did he plan on telling me? A couple of days later, he said the pavers would arrive and he could do July 30th. I was thrilled. On July 27th, I reached out to confirm. He said he had the pavers and ask if I knew where the utility lines were. Seriously!?! I told him I figured he'd put in an order to Miss Ulitities. He put in an order the next day. On July 30th at 830 am (the day of the job), I reached out and asked what time he'd be here. At that time, he said Miss Utilities wouldn't be out until Monday, and he wanted to schedule an appointment for Tuesday at 8 am to sign a proposal and do the work. No way! Combined with other reviews and now my own experience, there was no way I was letting this company do any work! Beware!

I've used them for three projects so far, and have been thrilled with the results. First time they rebuilt a collapsed cinderblock retaining wall with natural stone, the second time repointing an almost 40 year old stone retaining wall, and most recently installing a natural stone stairway and small retaining wall. Their prices are good and they are happy to suggest ways to trim costs, but more importantly, the work is excellent. Visited us twice for the purpose of giving a quote, once in 2020 and recently in 2022. Both times, we never heard back from them. Keeping prospective customers hanging is not good practice.

We were looking for a hardscaper to install a patio in our townhome backyard on a relatively short timeline (~month). We contacted more than 5 different contractors; some of which were rather uninterested in even performing an estimate.
On the contrary, Dave with HL Design was prompt in contacting me (same day that I inquired via home advisor) as well as coming by my property and performing an estimate. We received 3 different estimates, and ultimately chose HL Design seeing as his was the best combination of value and quality body of work.
The job itself turned out excellent and was completed on the timeline we had agreed to. One other thing I found interesting was that all other contractors felt they could easily disconnect and reconnect my AC unit since we wanted the unit to sit on the patio itself. HL design however suggested we call a professional to have this service done. This may have been an added cost but I believe it was the right advice seeing as there is much more that went into this than I had expected. I used Tony with Urbana HVAC for this and he was awesome in coming out on very short notice. That said, very happy with the work of HL design and we will surely enjoy our new outdoor living space as the weather starts to warm up!
