I was a student at Semester Off during the 14 week spring semester last year. Ive struggled with anxiety and depression since middle school which heightened when I got to college. I hit a very low point in my life my sophomore year and decided to take time off. I didnt know what to do and felt lost. My cousin told me about this program, and I decided to try it with him. It turned out to be the perfect place for me during that point in my life. I learned various life skills, built up my confidence, and immensely improved the health of my mind and body. You are truly able to connect with your fellow students and staff because of the mutual understanding and acceptance here. Ive never felt so much support and safety sharing what Ive been through because I was surrounded by people who truly care and understood my position. After Semester Off, I felt less alone and ready to go back to school. I returned to UMass that following semester and was able to flourish mentally, socially, and physically. Of course, I still have my struggles, but Semester Off made me feel more secure in myself, my past, and my future. I even returned to work with the students during this summer semester because of the difference this program had on me. Im incredibly grateful for this experience and recommend it to anyone who feels lost and alone during their time off.

Hi, my name is Henry Stowell and I was a student at semester off about a year ago this time. I joined in a place of hurt, depression, and aimless confusion about the direction of my life and what I wanted to do with it. Like a lot of young people, we will face this dilemma at some point in our early lives; perspective is not exactly there yet. Though Im only 20 at the point of writing this review, I gained perspective from Semester Off. When I look back at the past, and my emotional distress and discomfort at the time I joined SO, I can now see the significant difference in myself for the better. SO promotes YOU, and always supports one's constructive decisions. The many interesting, engaging and informing modules are a hallmark of creativity. Heck, I even look at the nutrition facts on the food I eat now! But that's so tedious right? Im young, my metabolism is fast right? Well, that's because SO taught me to, and how to take better care of myself, physically and mentally. That is just one of many examples and takeaways from this great program. I cannot speak more highly of the staff, they were kind, caring, available, and most importantly, openminded and adaptable. There was never a time I felt uncomfortable speaking with a staff member; I felt safe and heard every time. SO is a safe space where human differences are celebrated and openly talked about, in the best way. I learned so much from not only from the staff, but from other students. The connections I made with others at SO created many mental doors that I felt confident opening. I want to make it clear that SO doesnt force you to open them. Rather they create them, and push you positively when you need, and/or want it. So, if you decide to enroll in Semester Off (which I highly suggest you do), go in with an open mind, because youll leave with an even wider sense of self and perspective. Thank you for reading. P.s. miss you guys! Thank you to the staff, Ilan, Steph, Jess and Anna for a great ride.

I am a neurologist in the Boston area and two of my younger patients participated in Semester Off, at different times. They both raved about the friendships they formed, the quality of instruction, and the personal attention they received from the staff. They are both back in college (almost-migraine free) and thriving!

Our daughter entered in a very difficult place and found that she could be supported and challenged in ways that brought her through to taking more responsibility for herself. She was not alone, she found great staff and connections with others that witnessed her growth and offered a place to learn and communicate about this time in her life. She is doing great and has been consistently for a long time. We are very grateful!
