Visiting the town of Worcester (founded in 1848) on the way to Boston MA was a great surprise. What beautiful houses (in the purest New England style) and tree-lined avenues. Our friend, Urban Architect Hugo Rincn, who accompanied my son and me on this fantastic trip from Milton, Canada, to the land of Samuel Adams, tells us, asking us, as if we were his students: -Have you noticed the pastel tone in which all these old houses are painted? My son and I look at each other. We both tried to find some reason, but neither of us could say anything intelligent. - Leftover paint for boats and larger vessels were used by those who lived here, who were often the sailors themselves or their relatives or friends. -Oh! -I exclaimed, seeing my son who supported me. The City of Worcester was one of the largest in the State of MA, once an important manufacturing and commercial center and now home to biotechnology companies. It is built on a land that is rising, and as we do so, the modern houses are replaced by older ones, but also in perfect condition (probably due to the Boat Paint, I think). We continue ascending Salisbury Street, until we reach a park of the same name, at the top of which we discover a kind of fantastic Ball Stone Castle, called Bancroft Tower. We parked the car very close and looked carefully to find out what the construction was about. A granite plaque on the floor cleared our questions. Bancroft Tower: this Tower was built in 1900, to honor the memory of George Bancroft 1800-1891. He was born at the foot of this hill. He rose to the position of Secretary of the Navy. Founder of the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland. United States Minister to Great Britain and Germany. This Memorial was built by his friends and admirers.
