My mother was 90 years old, had dementia, and COPD. Last year she had broken her hip, and although we believe that she was just shedding the virus, she was diagnosed with COVID.
For 30 days she was kept in isolation, which accentuated her dementia. Her condition worsened, and because the hospital and rehab were short staffed, she was alone, confused, and desperate. We couldn't visit her because of the COVID restrictions. Because of her weakness, and the lack of care, we had trouble reaching her by phone.
It was obvious the the end was near, and it seemed so unfair that she seemed forgotten. There was staff shortage, so she often went without cleanup, and the food wasn't good.
My mother was so sweet and kind to others all of her life, and we couldn't imagine her final days being institutionalized and neglected. She didn't deserve that.
Our prayers were answered. My wife found out about Grand Oak Senior Living. My mom no longer tested positive, and Grand Oak welcomed her. Set in a neighborhood with large lots with trees and wildlife, it seemed like paradise. With only accomodations for several patients, it was like my mom was given private care. It is family owned with a competent staff. Everyone is so caring and professional. Vicki, one of the owners is a supervising nurse at Beaumont Hospital and very "on top" of things. The meals are home-cooked (not bland like most facilities) and everyone is caring and helpful.
Although your loved ones can be cared for by their own doctor, we used the one that came regularly to visit. When it came down to choosing hospice, they all worked together with us and with their network. At every step, the staff always called us to inform us of her status, and we were welcomed to visit safely. Quite different from our horrible experience of never being able to get answers about our mother.
We felt so relieved that mom's last days were spent with kind, caring people in a peaceful environment. Although it was difficult losing her, it put us at peace being able to see her pass with calmness.
We will be forever grateful for Grand Oaks. They softened loss.
