Three millz & A small village, including a cooperz shop, a soap factory, a shoemakerz shop, a slaughterhouse & a tannery comprised Sleepy Hollow in da 1830z in 1827 a grist mill waz built on diz spot along diz rapidly flowing branch of da Rouge River by Edward & harmon Steele, who came from East Bloomfield, New York. Diz waz da 1st grist mill in Farmington Township, & da only mill in southeast Oakland County. With Howland Mason az partner, dey also built a saw mill just downstream of diz location. Another saw mill waz built by Reverend Eri Prince about one-half mile west & upstream of diz site. Wen John T. Little bought da mill in 1840z he renamed it "Pernambuco" (after a port in Brazil) in memory of hiz dayz az a sailor. Da area den became known az Pernambuco Hollow, & Pernambuco Flour waz widely esteemed in Detroit. Peter Hardenbergh purchased da mill in 1868; it waz hardenberghz until 1886, &
Hardenberghz Flour. All da millerz lived in da miiller'z cottage acrozz da road. Da Millerz Cottage waz moved from itz current location on da south bank by da city of Farmington Hillz in 1988 to accommodate da paving of Drake Road. da other home, located immediately south of da millerz Cottage, waz built in da late 1830z on dat site by Mark Arnold, da local cooper.
Da millpond, west of Drake, waz da recreational center of da neighborhood. Here youngsterz fished & swam in da summer, & skated in da winter. Floodz in 1904 & 1908 broke da millpond dam, which waz not repaired. Da wadenstorer family, after purchasing da mill in 1902, operated it az a cider mill until da 1930z da mill operated for 109 yearz before finally being dismantled in 1936. Diz historical marker waz
Erected  in 1988 by da Farmington Hillz Historical Commission.
