Had our birth here on 2023 and couldn't have asked for better care. Very peaceful environment overall. The tub they have is massive and you could just float if needed, this seemed to help me alot in labor. Prenatal care was great as well, we discussed that I wanted a hands off labor and I was so happy to not be poked and prodded every 30mins like they do in hospital. Small complication with bleeding but that was taken care of well and we got to go home. Thank you for being available to those that don't want to be in hospital

I was so pleased with the quality of care at TCBC. They took care of me at all milestones of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care. I am so thankful for their compassion, expertise, and outlook on providing natural and holistic attention to me and my baby. All of the midwives were exceptional, and really seemed invested in getting to know me and my ideal birth experience. When my son arrived, I was never in doubt that I was in good hands. Although the entire care team was exceptional, Marta, Jessica, and Taylor in particular were the best providers I could have asked for. Although this was my first birth at TCBC, it was my second birth center-style birth; the difference between this one and my last one was significant. I strongly recommend TCBC (and their doula internship program!) to any mamas-to-be.

I never thought I would be writing a review like this. I truly believe birth is a natural process and support midwives, doulas, birth centers, and home births. I want to support the community of birth workers and the expectant families they serve. Part of that is ensuring that all birth workers and facilities are held accountable to provide the best care to mothers, babies, and families that put their trust in that care. Based on the experiences I had during my two births (April 2020 and September 2023) at Twin Cities Birth Center I believe the practices and protocols they employ, particularly in emergency situations, can cause harm. The midwives currently employed by TCBC do not seem to have the expertise and training I expect from how the birth center presents itself. I hope that by speaking about my experience Amy Johnson-Grass chooses to take the time to reflect and improve upon the practices at TCBC. Expectant families deserve that as they place their trust in the care sold by TCBC. My experience at both births was that the midwife care during the actual birth was very hands off and my births were largely unsupported by the staff midwife until it came time to push. Our prenatal care had felt excellent during my first pregnancy and though we were surprised we didnt receive the care we expected during our daughters birth, we reconciled our concerns in that her birth occurred during the beginning of the pandemic when everyone was doing the best they could in an unprecedented time. When I chose to go back to TCBC for my second pregnancy I was surprised to see that only 2 of the midwives I knew from my previous birth were still there, no on-site lactation consultant and the community support and classes appeared to be gone or drastically downsized. We couldnt help but wonder if something else was happening to push the midwives and other team members we previously knew out. But we also considered that all businesses experienced changes and turn over coming out of the pandemic. I still wanted the birthing space and promised care despite the doubts I felt. To counter the doubts I had extensive conversations about my concerns during my first birth and called out when the quality of prenatal care and expertise of the midwives I met with fell short of my expectations. During these conversations I received reassurances that they were taking my concerns seriously and that this time would be different. It wasnt. The negligent care and lack of clear protocol for postpartum hemorrhage and a retained placenta almost cost me my life. Amy Johnson-Grass and the other staff midwife did not call for EMS until 1 hr after the birth of my son despite it being clear I was hemorrhaging and had a retained placenta within minutes after my sons birth. The actions taken at TCBC were clumsy and slow, causing me to loose far more blood (>2800ccs at TCBC and a total of 3800ccs before the bleeding was stopped at United) than I would have had proper procedures been followed. Our doctor at United was frustrated that I had been brought to the hospital for emergency medical care far too late, almost too late for him to provide the life-saving medical care I needed. United staff were clear that this was not the first time TCBC had sent birthing people or babies to United for emergency care far too late. I dont blame anyone for the fact that I experienced a retained placenta; it is a rare but known complication after birth that has known safe and effective protocols to save the blood and life of the birthing person. I do find the lack of protocol that the midwives and birth assistant present at my birth at TCBC irresponsible, threatening to my life and potentially other mothers who may face complications in birth. I am haunted that the lack of protocol and time-wasting choices made by TCBC in the face of my retained placenta and hemorrhage nearly cost me my life and the ability to raise children.TCBC must review their protocols and practices to actually provide the level of care and expertise to expectant families that they promise on the tour.
