Garrison School

This a historical gem in Clay County and has been well preserved. They have tours and art galleries.

Since 1870 Garrison School has provided a sanctuary for education for the Clay County African American community. After Brown vs. the Topeka Board of Education; Garrison was used as a kindergarten for the now desegregated Liberty community. In 2003 the decommissioned school was purchased by the Clay County African American Legacy Inc and today serves as a cultural center hosting historical and artistic events, lectures and providing meeting space and offices for area organizations. I attended a performance of "Mr. Gantt, Modified" - a one man performance from area playwright, poet and historian Shelton Ponder. The 20th century telling of the African American historical perspective through the words and life events of Clarence E. Gantt; a former teacher and principal at Garrison School but relegated to study hall monitor in the Liberty Public School District after 1954's landmark court case to desegregate. A production that gave a unique perspective to national and local history though the personal anecdotes of Mr. Gantt and Mr. Ponder - a former student of Mr. Gantt.These types of events and the museum quality arts and artifacts contained here make Garrison a hidden jewel in Clay County. This should be a must see  place for all Clay County residents and anyone in the region interested in Civil Rights.
