I am instructing a several week program to children about animal folklore. With the help of Wendy, we found some books. There was other books we couldn't find as those books were being purged due to lack of interest. This was in late July I checked them out. When check in came, a text message was sent asking if I would like to renew. Well yes, that was simple and convenient. Close to that check in date came another text asking to renew. Well yes, as I am still doing this program the books are needed. The other day another text showed up about the books but with no renewal. I went in today to talk with them about how I could renew them even though I have had them for awhile. Standing in line waiting my turn. An older staff member came from behind me very confused as to why there was a line. Asked if I needed help. I said yes was wondering if I could renew these if possible? She sat down at the computer. Asked for my card number. With a smile said I didn't know it, sorry. With a frown she looked me up. She exclaimed in an overly surprised voice that they are over due since July and I can't have these books. I explained to her that a text was sent allowing me to renew. I found out her name is Margaret. She was very upset about the text messages. Flabbergasted, she said how dare you think that you have the right to take these books from other people. I asked if there was a waiting list for childrens folklore talking about native American history. She stood up agitated. I was waiting for her to stomp her foot. She said it doesn't matter you can't just take these books. I explained what I was using them for. She didn't seem impressed. She really could of cared less. Now, I understand that the books were checked out for a long period of time. But there could have been another way to communicate. If the texts that the customer gets about renewal doesn't get to the library then there should be some sort of communication about those texts and only renewing in person. I do like my local library and its great resources. It just takes 1 person to ruin your experience.
