The machine shop and engine house was very cool and had numerous rare antique train engines and cars. I went on a weekday with family however due to time constraints we were only able to visit the engine house and machine shop. The staff there was friendly. Many of the attractions are outside so I do recommend to go there when the weather is good, however even if it is raining its stuff worth a visit.

We came for spring break 2024, to ride in the caboose for the Valley ride. Its a 90min ride up to McGill and then back into Ely. After the ride, we got an hour-long guided tour of the machine shop. We got to meet DJ at the end, as well as watch the staff shunt some trains in and out of the roundhouse. We got lucky with some really awesome experiences, including snow during the ride. You also get access to walking around the yard and looking at buildings on your own. A lot of history here. The staff were very warm, welcoming and knowledgable. The gift shop has a lot of great items for sale and the museum has a lot of great artifacts. Definitely recommend if youre a train lover or have kids that enjoy trains.

We did the self guided tour and it was amazing. Would love to come back when the train is running and take a train ride. Love that we were able to go into some places they are actively working on these beautiful old engines and cars!
