Hired Sabio in Jan. 2023 to conduct a home structural inspection following noticing new cracks in the ceiling and uneven floors of the residential home we recently moved into. Sabio spent 30-40 minutes at the house looking on the outside and basement and assured me everything with the house was normal for its age and provided some basic suggestions to protect the foundation from water. However the inspector didn't do any actual tests or measurements - everything was just visual. When I asked whether a temporary post installed in our basement was safe, the inspector responded that he "has no idea" and it depends on the load, age of the post, etc. I had thought I was hiring Sabio to answer those exact questions.

If you want answers to your questions, do not hire this engineer. I was filing for permits for a home renovation. The township required an engineer to confirm 1 wall as load bearing or non-load bearing. I called Sabio for a quote and I was quoted $650 for a structural inspection, $500 for a letter for the township if the wall was not load bearing OR $650 for a report & beam design if it was load bearing. I had never hired an engineer before, so I didn't know what to expect. Jaime arrived at my home and seemed friendly. He very quickly determined the wall we wanted to remove was load bearing and very confidently stated the wall could not be moved or removed. He didn't provide any detail as to why but he's the engineer so we took his word for it. Never thoroughly inspected the trusses in our attic, didn't measure anything or take any notes. He mentioned several times that what we wanted to do was impossible and that we'd need to compromise. He spent about 25 minutes at my home and I was left with more questions than answers. I asked him for a day or two to reconfigure the plans and he agreed. While I was doing this, I had some questions for him that I sent via email regarding whether the wall could be moved 4 feet if the trusses above the wall were reinforced. He said "Not sure what you mean by that." So I provided an example (marrying 2x6's to the truss chords) but again, he replied vaguely, "Theoretically it could work. It would depend on the details of the reinforcement. I cannot say definitively, since those would need to be reviewed." So it was impossible but might be possible? Got it. And why was I providing possible solutions when he's the engineer? I thanked him for the feedback and communicated how the process felt vague. I asked "Outside of completely changing the plans, what is needed from me to work toward a solution?" That's when things turned. He replied with a rant about how he only provided answers based on the information I provided in my questions, how he had only been to my property once and I didn't even have drawings to show the sizes or configurations of the roof trusses (because we all know every homeowner has technical drawings of the trusses in their attic). He said I wasn't providing specific details. I was under the impression that he was there to inspect and provide that detail though. I mean, the township did require me to hire an engineer to confirm these things. Why would I pay someone to give me information I already have? In his rant, he said that a report would now cost $1,500 instead of the $500 or $650 I was previously told it would cost. This seemed fishy, so I decided to get a second opinion. I hired another engineer. Completely different experience. The second engineer arrived with measuring tools, moved insulation to inspect the trusses in my attic, measured the wall in question, measured the trusses in the attic, took notes, made drawings of the trusses and wall and checked for downward pressure at the top of each wall stud. After all of this, he determined the wall WAS NOT load bearing. Very professional and thorough. He did what he was hired and paid to do. Now that I saw with my own eyes the extent of a REAL structural inspection, I wrote Jaime back. I told him that I felt I should get some of my money back because he did not provide the service that I paid him for. He told me I paid for "travel time to and from the property" and "for the site assessment of a professional engineer," and that that is what he had provided, so "we will not be providing any refunds." It was a money grab. Jaime was paid $650 to provide answers. Instead he came to the house, didn't really provide any answers to our questions, remained vague enough to fish more questions out of us and when the opportunity struck, more than doubled his asking price for a report for the township. He never explained how he determined the wall was load bearing without inspecting the trusses or measuring anything. Unethical business with no regard whatsoever for the customer.

We are currently using Sabio Engineering Services on our six-story luxury condominium project on the Jersey Shore. Sabio has been hired as a 3rd party engineer for the structural components of the project. They are responsible for inspecting the steel reinforcement, supervising the concrete placement, and providing concrete test cylinders to ensure the concrete meets our project engineers requirements. As the job progresses they will also be monitoring and inspecting the structural steel and other components of the project. Sabio Engineering has provided us with professional, clear, concise, reports of all inspections. The owner Jaime Silva has personally been onsite for inspections and I've worked closely with him to make sure our project meets or exceeds all the requirements. It's been a pleasure working with Jaime and his staff. We look forward to continuing the process with this project and others in the future.

You paid for a visual inspection of your existing home and that is what you received. You have no blueprints of any kind and your walls are covered with sheetrock. How am I supposed to do an analysis without knowing all the relevant information? Unfortunately I'm only an engineer and I cannot see through walls. If I had that ability, I would not be working at all. I do not guesstimate. Specially when my license is on the line.
