Northwestern Mutual’s financial advisors are salesmen who earn commissions by selling you as much as they can from predetermined product lists (particularly whole life insurance - a complex, low return product only appropriate for particular circumstances, not the average person). Some of NWM's products may be appropriate for you, but do your own research and shop around before accepting their often fee-laden recommendations.
There are plenty of free resources and podcasts that will teach you the basics so you can make informed decisions – check out ChooseFI, JL Collins, Meaningful Money, or Dough Roller for starters. I wish I knew about these before I signed up for some expensive NWM products when I first started out.
