A bit nervous going to a new gym for the first time here and in SD (started my BJJ journey in MD) I was pleasantly surprised! This is a great gym! Its a clean and very competitive environment with all different ages, weight classes and skill levels. The instructors are welcoming and very knowledgeable. In the two days I was in town and attended classes as a blue belt we learned two techniques I was aware of and taught differently. I already have two new techniques to add to my arsenal! When I move to Hillsboro in the near future, this is where I will be training

My little one just turned 4 and we had this place in mind all along for him to join. We were super excited to be getting him the Free trail, but once we got there we were not greeted and we did not have idea on what to do or what to expect. They suited my son and had him wait on the mat for instructions. My son was not sure how to follow EXACTLY what the man was telling him to do (Again, it his first time engaging in such activity) I kept hearing the man tell my son you got to be able to follow directions, the way he was looking and tone of voice of the man was not friendly for a 4 year old. After that they had them line up and do runs around the room and they wanted my son to run directly behind the leader, my son didnt run behind very well but tried what he could. I felt uncomfortable because the instructors were grouped and I knew they were talking about my son not following, my little one was also the youngest amount all the other student well over age. I was ready to pull the little one out since he was not doing so well with direction and all other student were much older and knew what to do. The instructor told me they never had me fill out the liability form and my son shouldnt have been on the mat(While signing up online for the free class there is no form to fill) While I was filling out the liability form another instructor came with my son and told me my son was not ready and he stood to the side waiting for something; I realized he was waiting for me to undress my son and give back the suit, which I did. No one spoke to me and let me know suggestions or what we could do, and we just left. This place can be discouraging. I wouldnt recommend this place AT ALL for a first time toddler if they cant follow EXACTLY what the instructors are saying or dont understand the moves the instructors are asking of them.(AGAIN, it was our first time and my son has never been in such environment or understood the movements). We are now looking for a new place to place our son. I dont think this place is bad but I dont think they have a great structure or information on their website regarding what to expect or what THEY expect if you have a child under the age of 5. RESPONSE TO GYMs RESPONSE: Photo below shows all the messages I got from the gym and no liability doc ever mentioned. Emails from Ana. If you guys sent it through another email address it was not mentioned to me to look out for. I know for a fact I was there longer than a minute trying to figure out what we were supposed to do since there was no front desk person, but that is not even the issue. The way you choose to express yourself with how my child showed no ability to play a simple game shows even more why this is not a place I would want my child around. Also, you mentioning it may be difficult for any parent to get the news that their child is not ready. This is 100 not difficult, at least not for me. If a child is not ready they are not ready but as a professional establishment I would have thought this approach to a first timer would have been different. I tried pulling my son of the matt since I could see he was obviously not ready and I had my other little man with me. I was advised to keep him on the Matt to keep trying (I had appreciate it than but now reading this response from the gym i should have taken my little one and left) After reading this response I definitely wont be coming back or suggesting it to anyone.

I kept getting charged even though I talked in person with Anna about not attending anymore classes. I shouldn't have to jump through hoops in order to stop future charges, verbal communication should be sufficient. If I hadn't noticed the charges on my credit card bill they would have kept charging me even though my daughters were not attending classes. Its a EXTREMELY DECEITFUL way to run a business

Hello Miriam, we are so sorry you had this experience on your first day. Please let me break this down for you.I reviewed the camera footage to see what took place. I see that when you showed up there was lass than 1 minute before a member of our staff greeted you. At this time your child was promptly brought onto the mat and given a uniform to wear for class. This is on camera, and we would be delighted to show you.Right away your child was unable to follow simple directions as to line up like all other students. Our coaches did help him repeatedly, as we do with all new members. With the class, he was even given several attempts to follow behind others in a slow-pace run around a room and continued to stop, wander off, and did not respond to coaches in order to get back into line. There were 12 attempts to get him back into line, all within first 3 minutes time. Your child showed no ability to play a simple game of "copy-cat" where all students place one hand on the mat, then the other, then feet together, then apart, etc. Your child continued to get lost and stare off in the opposite direction, and when approched for help, there was no ability to engage with the instructors. This is the class for kids ages 4-7yrs. Your son was not placed with "older students". As it may be difficult for any parent to get news that their child is not ready to begin training, this is fundamental to our process of teaching in any setting. Whether it be gymnastics, swimming, bike riding, or, in this case, Jiu Jitsu, children must be able to follow simple instructions in order to learn the basics and thrive in any environment. Lastly, we did communicate with you via email leading up to the initial class and it seems you were sent the proper forms to fill out prior to arriving and you did not follow those instructions either. The form was not filled out. With this, we will leave the door open and, after a few months and some basic in-home tutoring, we can give him another try. If you wish to take him to another academy we understand, but be aware that in order to learn a new skill there must be the ability to follow instructions. Thank you,Impact Jiu Jitsu Hillsboro

I'm sorry you feel this way, and that you did not understand the instructions given on how to terminate. We ask that, in a written agreement, for there to be written notice to terminate. This is a simple, but effective way to keep records of such requests, and most places will require "written notice". You don't even need to come in, just send an email and ask for termination (no reason needed). Now, if you requested and we did not fulfill that request, you can send it to us with the email timestamp and we will be glad to refund your money. If you did not email after being told to, there is nothing we can do.
