Beware transam bikers: This store charges for ice. When my husband and I walked into the store the two employees at the cash register were busy talking to each other. Not wanting to interrupt them, I made my way to the back and filled up my water bottles with ice and water. As my husband and I typically do while biking, we recognize that businesses have a cost vested in their soda fountains and we buy other items to support the convenience stores. As we got up to the check out line with our overpriced snacks, the cashier asked how many bottles we had filled with ice. She proceeded to charge us 6 dollars for our ice. There was no sign at the machine that I saw, and it felt dishonest of a business to charge whatever they wanted to without informing their customers prior to the purchase. In hindsight I should have interrupted the store employees to inquire about it, but that would have felt rude at the time. My husband and I have biked over 4,000 miles on our trip. Were been to over a thousand convenience and general stores who have freely given us ice and deemed it a good investment for the business we generate. Out of the handful of stores that charge for ice, (in touristy areas) there have always been posted signs by the machine. You have every right to charge for ice, but in the name of good business etiquette, please post a sign stating your price.
