As both a scientist and a poet, I come to PLAYA for contemplation, for observation, and above all for inspiration. Here the Winter Rim escarpment looms over the bone-white playa of Summer Lake, and the Great Basin landscape of buttes and sagebrush meets desert wetlands thronged with ducks, swans, and pelicans. Petroglyphs and ancient habitations mark the long history of indigenous peoples, while ranchers and newly-arrived urbanites mingle in the local market and saloon. Residency at PLAYA provide access to this extraordinary place, a place where artists and scientists will find new connections and new depths in their work.

A friend and I spent 4 glorious days at Playa on a self- directed residency in Cabin 10 with attached studio. Not only did we love the quiet, peaceful environment and big views of Summer Lake, we each painted art that was beyond our norm and gave us the confidence to keep painting landscapes in a more contemporary style. I chose a few landmarks at Playa such as the boardwalk and ever-changing views of the dry lake with big skies. I recommend Playa to any artist for a peaceful inspiring space to create art. And the staff of Carrie and Kris are so helpful and knowledgable about the area. Can't wait to return!
