My experience with Dr. Mazzacco was the worst experience I've had with any doctor, in any practice, in any specialty, with any member of my family -- pediatric, adult or geriatric. I was in the surgical suite, my abdomen was already marked for surgery when Dr. Mazzacco came in to introduce herself before my procedure. I wasn't due for surgery yet, which was a mistake made by the staff of LGH. I was unaware of why I had been taken down for surgery so soon and had many questions still unanswered about my surgery. When I asked Dr. Mazzacco if she, as a physician, knew about the effects of my surgery on my pre-existing condition and why I had been scheduled so soon, she lost control. The surgical nurse, a staff nurse, my husband and two sons all witnessed her response to me. She was very angry and agitated and scolded me because "she was not my doctor" and didn't know about my situation, and yelled at me that this was all to be taken care of before being brought down for surgery. I was stunned, no one else in the room spoke for a moment, the surgical nurse had her hand on my shoulder to soothe me. My sons kept looking at me and their father awaiting a response because even at 10 and 15, they knew that what had just happened was so unbelievably wrong and disproportionate to my inquiry. My husband embraced me to calm my shaking and my tears. She ended her ranting with "I will no longer be doing this surgery" and left. The surgical nurse excused herself and caught up with Dr. Mazzacco outside of the surgical suite to speak with her for a moment. When the surgical nurse returned, she was extremely kind, made great effort to console me and assured me that she didn't understand Dr. Mazzacco's behavior and that this was not typical of their staff. She explained that a report would be filed personally by her and her staff nurse. The surgery was cancelled and I was returned to my room. LGH's Patient Advocacy representative took my statement and explained that my statement and the nurses' individual reports would be presented to the Board for review and possible revokation of her surgical privileges at LGH. He offered my husband and sons discount coupons for the cafeteria. (Really????) When my husband was leaving the hospital that afternoon, he crossed paths in the lobby with Dr. Mazzacco who apologized for her behavior. My husband told her that it was me who needed the apology, not him. She never did apologize to me, LGH never followed up with me and it was never mentioned again, even after several inquiries by my husband and me. Her behavior in the OR delayed my surgery for three days (because it had occurred on a Friday and they couldn't reschedule until Monday) at the expense of my insurance company, the total inconvenience of my family, and delayed my husband's return to work for an additional 5 days. Bad, bad, bad all the way around. I never followed up on this after my discharge, but have been carrying it around internally because it went so unresolved. No patient, ever, much less IN THE SURGICAL SUITE, feeling trepidation and anxiety about something as serious as surgery, should have to be subjected to an angry outburst of any kind. It's inappropriate for an adult, much less by their adult surgeon! Maybe she was having a bad day, got bad news, was flustered by traffic that morning ... whatever. But keep it under control with a patient, and if nothing else, take responsibility, own it and apologize! The scene itself showed a total lack of integrity, professionalism, and compassion; to do nothing afterward just further confirms it.
