image We visited Keystone in December 2022. We stopped at all three stores that were open. We fell in love with SD and the genuine wonderful people there. We ended up purchasing two leather jackets from Aura Gallery and Gold on Dec. 2 for a hefty amount and extra for shipping so we didn't have to fight them on the plane. Long story short, 20 days later and we still don't have them. And ironically there is no contact information online anywhere for this business. I contacted Robin at the Chamber of Commerce in Keystone. She was so kind and concerned. She offered to physically go to the store and talk to them for me. Her kindness and willingness to go the extra mile to help a visitor once again proved the high caliber of folks that call SD home. Robin is a Rockstar and no matter how this turns out I am grateful to her. Way to represent such a wonderful place!

image For a place that is so close to some of the most beautiful natural landscapes there is (The Black Hills, Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore, etc.) this place is unfortunately was an UNWELCOMING as it gets. We were treated terribly and shop owners refused us service. They made fun of us. Why? Because we were wearing masks to prevent the spread of diseases and viruses. Oh, and most of them were old - so they were the very high risk group we were trying to protect. It would have been much worse for us had we have been people of color in masks, part of the LGBTQ community in masks, or any other group besides Caucasian - because even as white people they were literally terrible to us. Yes, you read that correctly. Sure, the town is 94% white but I would think that a town wants 100% of tourists and 100% of those tourists spending. Not this town though. Many shops had shirts out front promoting Trump (which is their right, certainly, but it's off putting for anyone who doesn't like him) and the democratic t-shirts said JOE AND THE HO. Referring to VP candidate and US Senator Kamila Harris as a ho is not the way to represent small town values or hospitality. It shows that these people likely have more bullets than brain cells, which is fine, but maybe stay of politics then. We loved our time in the Black Hills, we loved Custer State Park, and even had fun at the crowded Mount Rushmore - but we couldn't wait to get the heck out of Keystone. It's not only a COVID hotbed (with no one social distancing, wearing masks, or limiting occupancy) but it's somewhere I didn't feel safe or comfortable. As a white person. Take that for what it's worth. The rest of our time in South Dakota was safe and welcoming but I would never go back to Keystone again. Not with so many picturesque mountain towns that make you feel welcome and safe.
