I am writing this for the sole purpose of hopefully protecting other consumers from similar fraudulent behavior and poor workmanship. I selected Benthal Construction (Eddie Benthal) to make improvements on part of my grandparents’ house, a home I grew up in and wanted to keep as a special place for my family. My experience with Benthal is that he made promises he did not keep — ranging from when he agreed to start and finish the job to the quality of labor and materials he used. A job that he said would take one month (two at the most) dragged out to six months, and still he had not completed the work to an acceptable degree. My family had to engage the assistance of an attorney to get Benthal to finish his work to even a minimum acceptable standard. A few examples: Benthal installed substandard materials, including used materials that should have been new. I was paying him to do a quality job. His flooring install was so bad that the entire floor throughout the two full rooms had to be completely pulled up and redone. (Note: We required Benthal to use a different contractor of our choosing for the redo, and the other contractor did an excellent job.) While the flooring was being redone, we discovered that Benthal had not properly secured the floor joists. The subfloor was actually sinking. When questioned, Benthal stated that the materials were installed with one method; however, when we had another contractor crawl under the house to verify, we found the materials were incorrectly installed. Benthal had even used roofing nails in the joist hangers. I am still in disbelief with Benthal’s dishonesty throughout the job, continually hiding substandard materials and attempting to cover up inferior workmanship. As time goes by, who knows what else we will find he covered up. Another important discovery is that, although he presents himself as a licensed contractor experienced in home improvements, upon further research I have learned from the TN Dept of Commerce & Insurance that Eddie Benthal (Benthal Construction) failed to renew his Contractor’s license in 2007. I did my best to be patient, wanting to support a local business owner, but I now know that Benthal cannot be trusted. I will still strive to “keep it local†for future work, but I will try to find a business owner who can be trusted. As stated above, I am sharing this information so others can hopefully avoid the fraudulent behaviors and poor workmanship of Eddie Benthal. I wish I had had the benefit of this feedback/information when I was selecting a contractor for my home. [Grade F]
