This place is so amazing!! My favorite museums are house museums ...especially if it seems like people just walked away. This is that! It is full of treasurers...including exquisite clothes in the closets and the table set (with photos and stories about the family). It is beautiful educational and charming. Our guide Gracie was so great.

What an awesome experience this was. I went with my family, not really knowing what to expect, and we had a great time. The guides were very knowledgeable about the house and were able to answer all of our questions. The home is so beautiful and set up just like the old days. I definitely recommend every family check this out.

  • First of all, I would like to thank Ms. Sharon for taking us to visit this monument that has been preserved with all the efforts. Her elegant temperament, detailed explanations, and enthusiastic attitude made me admire her endlessly. We even interacted like old friends. The young and beautiful girl at the front desk was also very kind and enthusiastic. She also recommended another Chinese-related attraction to me. The tickets were so cheap that when I wanted to give her a tip as a thank you, she suggested I donate it to the museum. They need more funds to invest in repairing and protecting this historical site. The introduction to this old building in Wikipedia is in English. I have posted the Chinese translation below, hoping to show it to more Chinese people. Magoffin Home is located in El Paso, Texas. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. On February 19, 1985, the surrounding area was declared the Magaffie Historic District. Under authority from the Texas Historical Commission, the home is now known as the Magalfin State Historic Site. Built in 1875 as a combination of local adobe style with Greek Revival details, the Magoffin Home is an example of the Territorial Style. Thick adobe walls keep the house cool in the hot summers and warm in the winter. The house consists of three wings, each built at a different time, with the last one built in the 1880s as a center connecting the first two wings. There are 19 rooms, eight fireplaces and 14-foot (4.3-meter) ceilings. Family members lived in it for 109 years, and much of the original furniture is still on display, including an 11.5-foot-tall (3.5-meter) half-test bed. Built by pioneer Joseph Magoffin, he and his wife Octavia (MacGreal) lived there until their deaths. They had two children, James (Jim) and Josephine. James married Anne Buford and had four children, Anne, James, Mary and Jim. After James died of appendicitis in 1913, Anne continued to care for her father-in-law at the homestead until his death in September 1923. Josephine married William Jefferson Glasgow, a future brigadier general, in what one lavish newspaper hailed as the "wedding of the century." After Joseph's death, Josephine inherited the house and James' family settled in Los Angeles, where Anne lived until her death in 1962. The last family member to live in the house was Josephine's daughter Octavia Magoffin Glasgow, who died in 1986. After retiring from the Army, the Glaswegian returned to El Paso, Texas, and remodeled the interior of his home, installing gas heating and electrical service, updating the plumbing, and modernizing the kitchen. The transformation included plastering directly over her mother's Victorian wallpaper and removing the canvas ceilings (mantas). In 1976, the house was sold to the city and state, although Joseph's granddaughter, Octavia Magoffin Glasgow, retained the life lease and continued to live in the house until her death in 1986. The house was restored in 1977-1978 by historic preservationist Eugene George, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture. The homestead is located at 1120 Magogin Avenue in El Paso, Texas and is currently jointly owned by the City of El Paso and the State of Texas. It has been maintained by the Texas Historical Commission since 2007, when the agency's authority was transferred from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, which had overseen the historic site since 1976. There is a historical marker. Casa Magoffin Companeros (Friends of Magoffin Home) hosts several annual events at the home, including children's camps and classes during the summer, and a holiday open house in December. Family tours are offered Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The last tour starts at 4pm. Tour tickets and unique gifts can be purchased at the Visitor Center located across the street from the home at 1117 Magalfin Avenue.
