Thank you for reaching out with your concerns, Linda and Fati. 11/07/2023 - You originally brought your vehicle to us with several concerns including the “brakes make whistle noise” which we inspected. Regarding the brakes, we were unable to replicate your noise concern and found your front and rear brakes within specifications at that time. However, we did find the front brake rotors worn, glazed, and rusted on the outer lip. Due to these findings, we offered to replace the front brakes for you which you declined. 02/06/2024 - You brought the vehicle to us as you had a concern about the brakes making noise, and the brake pedal feeling soft (along with other concerns). Upon drop off of the vehicle, you declined any diagnostics and requested for us to replace the front brakes only. Despite declining diagnosis for the soft brake pedal concern, we still looked into this concern for you at no charge as a soft pedal can be a safety issue. At that time, we found the right rear brake shoe dragging on the brake drum causing rear brake noise, along with excessive brake dust; this was all being caused by the rear brakes being out of adjustment. Your rear brake shoes/drums were still within specifications at that time, and all that was required to solve this issue was a rear brake clean/adjustment which we performed for you. We found the brake lines to have some air in them and the fluid showing signs of age, so we also performed a brake fluid exchange. You were provided a copy of our Digital Vehicle Inspection with our findings, and as you can see in the pictures provided; your rear brake wheel cylinders were not leaking at that time, hence why we did not recommend replacing them. 04/04/2024 - You brought your vehicle to us stating your brake light was illuminating on the dash. We performed a courtesy diagnosis on your vehicle and found leakage from the rear brake wheel cylinders, in return, this caused your brake fluid level to decrease in the brake master cylinder, and ultimately illuminated the brake light on the dash. We provided you pictures along with an estimate to replace the failed components, but you declined for us to perform the repairs. You were advised at this time that this is a potential safety concern as leaking wheel cylinders can cause a loss of brake pressure, but still to no avail on your approval to fix this concern for you. We were advised by you that you are not willing to put any more money into this vehicle. It has been made clear to us since your initial visit that you are not willing to fully maintain this vehicle due to its age and mileage, so in return, we have accommodated by prioritizing repairs with you, particularly when it comes down to safety components. We must keep in mind - your vehicle is 16 years old with over 170,000 miles on the odometer, and due to aging rubber components, parts are prone to failure. We do not recommend repairs on vehicles that are not needed, and we can not foresee components failing if there are no initial signs of failure. In this scenario, your brake wheel cylinders were not leaking when we performed our first two inspections on your vehicle, hence why we did not recommend replacing them. It just so happens that these wheel cylinders have rubber seals that have perished due to age, in return this has caused them to leak; this is not something that could have been foreseen based on our initial findings.
