If I could give this place negative stars I would. I was there in 2022 for rehab after surgery. The place smells like urine, there is dirty laundry stacked up in the halls, and there was black mold (I have pictures) in the closet of the room I was in. There were cobwebs covering the outside of the windows. I was left sitting in my own urine for hours. I developed rashes all over my butt and legs because of this. I was told to poop on the bed because their bedpans weren't large enough. For real I bought my own via Amazon. The food is horrible. I have pictures. For real there were things I on my plate I could not identify. One night for dinner I was served mixed veggies (the frozen or canned type), corn, and potatoes. I am a diabetic and was on a high protein diet for healing. I had people bringing me food from the outside because I couldn't eat their food and in 2 weeks had lost 30 pounds. They sent a psychiatrist to see me because I was complaining too much and he wanted to give me medicine to 'calm me down'. I refused. Their gym is a joke. What little equipment they have is mostly broken. So basically you are working with bands and weights and that's all they can do for you. I was there for approximately 3 weeks. I was never given a shower or bath. They may have a library and outdoor area as they advertise but I never them. But wait, there's more! I went back to my doctor for a visit and he wanted to pull me out of there and send me back to the hospital because, no surprise, I was not healing there. I was actually getting worse. Even though I had seen the doctor the previous day and had instructions to return to the hospital, they refused to release me until the very end of the day with their doctor calling my doctor several times to argue with him over my care and treatment. I think they waited so long so they could charge my insurance for another day. This necessitated me being admitted via the emergency room and the wait (as is usual with emergency rooms) was very long. If you send your loved ones here they will deteriorate and die. Avoid this place at all costs.

Facility is clean. Food is average. Nurse and CNA are good. PT and OT is horrible. I don't think they know what they are doing! If you need PT and OT this is not the place for you.

I wanted to give this place an unbiased review after seeing all the negativity, but visiting my grandma earlier today, there just isn't any care involved. Yes the staff were friendly, the place definitely seems run down and in poor condition. Everything is in need of cleaning and updating. I could elaborate more but at this rate apparently the reviews only seem to warn future clients instead of commanding a change.

When I was told by my Kaiser case manager that they were sending me to Carlin Springs for rehab five days after triple bypass surgery (April 18, 2023), I immediately read the google reviews and I was quite horrified by the stories. Also, the ambulance for transport didn't arrive at the hospital until 4:30 AM, Monday, so my arrival at CS at 5:15 AM was less than warmly welcomed. But as the day wore on, I was visited by staff from the various departments, and I was impressed by the genuine concern and attention I received. I'm writing this review because I learned that Carlin Springs is under new management and I want to comment on my experience, which was very much better than what I had feared. 1) This is the most important thing I can say. I received immediate response to a serious concern: On my second day, I had a very unpleasant experience with a nursing aide. They were abrupt, argued with me about needing a larger BP cuff and when I tried to say how important this was to me, and began to cry, they scolded me for crying. I called the Activities Director, who had given me her extension, to see what my options were. She immediately spoke to the Assistant Director of Nursing, who then came to my room, and met with me and my daughter who was on zoom. She listened very carefully, validated that the behavior was wrong, and told me she would take care of this. Not only did she address the aide, she also made sure I had what I needed that day, including a shower, so I did not need to interact with the aide. When I did interact with that aide later in the week, their attitude was quite improved and we even had a few friendly moments, I also was visited by the Administrator to make sure everything was ok. 2) As to the rest of the staff, aides, LPN's, OT and PT, they were kind, patient and skilled. OT and PT were careful and encouraging as I got stronger and was able to follow instructions. Most of the time when I had to "ring" for an aide, I was responded to in a timely manner. I was especially grateful to OT when they responded to a specific need, for example how to get in and out of a higher car. I had learned to use my arms to lift myself, following hip surgery, and that was no longer possible after the bypass. They suggested that my friend bring her car, and then taught me how to get in and out, and practiced with me until I was confident. 3) My room was clean and attended to; the rest of my unit/floor was clean and pleasant. Maintenance staff was friendly and efficient. 4) A word about the food. Uneven is the first word that comes to mind. Meals ranged from pleasant and tasty to soggy, cold, white. I would have preferred more whole foods, grains, vegetables. Also, a couple of times when I left a message on the extension for food service, I did not get a reply. 5) I also found that the discharge procedure was a bit disorganized. I was brought a set of papers to sign, and as I read them over, I found a couple of items missing from the details about follow up care at home. But again, it was addressed immediately and corrected. 6) I appreciated the almost daily attendance by the Kaiser MD, who was a good listener as well as reassuring. Overall, I am grateful for my time in Carlin Springs. I pray that the new management continues the path of improvement of this service which is so essential to folks like me after surgery and before returning home. Thank You!
