Shearwater University

We recently bought a 55 Ocean Alexander Pilothouse. Even though we had many years of boating experience, our insurance company required us to have at least 50 hours training from a licensed captain. We found Shearwater University at the boat show and subsequently hired Captain Phyllis Woolwine. Our experience was excellent! Captain Wooly proved to be an excellent instructor. The curriculum she provided was thorough and addressed more than what the insurance company required. She not only taught how to do things, but also why. Her enthusiasm for safe boating and education was unending. We would definitely recommend Shearwater University for your boating education needs. Money well spent!

I feel like Shearwater University is my best kept secret but I know I want every one to hear about and benefit from the same amazing experience I've had with Captain Wooly (Phyllis Woolwine) and her crew. They are simply the best and I can't shout enough about them that they are the way to go when it comes to getting your sea legs!!!

Phyllis is an excellent instructor. She understood my weaknesses, provide clear explanation, and tested and challenged me. I greatly improved my skills, and I will be a much safer boater because of her.

Captain Phyllis really knows her stuff and is a competent, encouraging teacher. She breaks information into small bites and works up to mastery of a maneuver. We had a 2-day class with her and while we ran into some unexpected things with our own boat, she was flexible and made the best use of our time. Highly recommend!

My partner and I jumped into PNW yachting with both feet, purchasing a 50 steel adventure trawlerfirst boat eversingle screwwithout bow thrusters. We had zero boating experience beyond johnboats and canoes on small Midwestern lakes & rivers. This had the potential of being the worst decision wed ever made. Phyllis was a Godsend. Her Shearwater curriculum, coupled with extensive, hands on training tailored to the characteristics of our challenging boat, gave us the knowledge, strategies and confidence to realize our dreams. We cant say enough good things about our experience with Shearwater U.
