Pros: The hike is surrounded by beautiful old growth forest. It is also off the beaten path so there won't be a lot of traffic on the trail. Cons: Based on the Google pin, there is only parking for 3 cars. The trailhead by the Google pin is off the side of a bridge and VERY steep. You will need to be in decent shape to make it up and down. There isn't much of a "town". Just a couple decrepit stone buildings. The trail gets flooded easily and will have huge mud puddles.

We hiked in from the Fairfax Bridge. We parked on the west side of the bridge where a pullout holds about five cars. The scramble down from the south side of the east end of the bridge is the worst part. It's steep and we had to carry a Corgi, but there are handles on a cable to assist. Once on the Foothills Trail, an old railroad bed, it's easygoing with muddy sections. The worst can be bypassed on the west side by climbing small mounds. The ghost town of Melmont has some artifacts, including walls made of concrete and rocks and some metal from old vehicles which some have used as target practice. You can descend to Carbon River which is gorgeous. The forest while being second growth is beautiful, even in late December. Parking: There is room for about five cars on the west side of the bridge. There are a few more spots north of the bridge in pullouts here and there, but will require some walking on the road to get to the hike. Dog-friendliness: Our dogs loved romping around leash-free.
