David M. Fen

I purchased a reclaimed wood plank with the idea that I could turn it into a project. I decided it would make a great fireplace mantle, but because it wasn't long enough, reached out to Mr. Fen by email in the hopes he could help me create a mantle by adding additional pieces of wood to it. I'll be honest, I was actually expecting to get no response. Contractors that I have reached out to in the past have been pretty unresponsive. This was certainly not the case with Mr. Fen, who called back immediately and left a detailed vm explaining to me that additions made to the existing plank (which he identified from my photos as reclaimed fir) would look tacky, would not be the way to go, but that I should be able to find a piece of reclaimed fir in the dimensions I needed. He also offered suggestions as to where I could search. Wow! How incredibly refreshing to find someone so responsive and willing to help that is getting absolutely nothing from it. Mr. Fen's professionalism, expertise, patience and kindness are qualities I look for in a contractor, and because of this experience, we are hoping to be able to contact Mr. Fen to help us with our next renovation.

I had David build a custom reading bench with big storage drawers underneath.  David was a pleasure to work with, great communication, and was timely.  The bench came out fantastic and we couldn't be happier.

I contacted David because I was trying to find a Seattle-based craftsman to make a custom cedar engagement ring box for my now-fiance. It was an unusual request; I couldnt find anyone else even willing to consider custom woodwork on such a small scale at a reasonable price. David was incredible. With relatively little direction from me, he created a plan for the piece and a fantastic creative concept. PNW cedar was critical for this ring box, so David advised on the best wood for my needs and even designed laser etching of cedar boughs to decorate the top of the box. I mentioned I was going to propose during a camping trip so he painted the inside top of the box with the night sky. It was perfect. His craftsmanship is impeccable, he always sent timely updates on the project, and he worked within my timeline. Im located in Texas so he shipped the final piece to me, and he tracked its progress even more closely than me - texting me when there was a slight shipping delay before I even noticed.
