    Make sure you get what you pay for. Last year I ordered a nuc and ended up with a glorified package. Instead of receiving an established, proven queen with 5 frames of her eggs and brood I got anew caged queen with 5 frames of eggs and brood from who knows where. I was promised the new queen would be a "Rock Star" but instead turned out to be a lemon. Hands down worst experience I've had in 26+ years of beekeeping, with packages, nucs, swarms, splits and hives rescued from fallen trees. My advice; make sure you receive what you pay for, and deal with a vendor that backs their product Just Sayin! Just to clarify; When I arrived at the farm to pick up my nuc, I was presented with a 5 frame box with bees, brood and food, and had to wait while a queen was caught and caged. Because no other options were presented to me at the time and I was assured a newer/younger queen was the better option in the long run, and in the interest of expediency, I decided to move forward. It was only after the bees were installed and dispersed in a 10 frame box that I was given the option to return them. Totally possible but a bit inconvenient. My new queen was successfully installed and performed well for a brief amount of time, but it is problematic when there is a sudden drop in egg production and the workers start producing an abundance of supersedure and swarm cells, both indicative of problems with the queen. While it is true I received another queen from Stanwood Bees, it wasn't free, and was all for naught as there was apparently a virgin queen already established the hive. My contention is that this whole situation could have been avoided if I'd received the nuc I originally paid for and that the industry standard for nucs is to include an established laying queen in that nuc. The idea of introducing new queens into 5 frame boxes and labeling them as nucs is contrary to the practices of other suppliers I've reached out to. Nevertheless, I did walk away from the farm knowingly, so I bear some of the blame for being in a hurry and allowing myself to be convinced to gamble on a potential "Rock Star" queen. I'm sure most of Stanwood Bee Company's packages and nucs are successful and I don't think there is purposeful negligence or anything inherently dishonest, but obviously, I am not in total agreement with Tim's industry standards or resolution practices. Just sayin, make sure you get what you pay for.

Just Sayin!
Just to clarify;

Business Response on Google Feb 14th, 2024
2/3 of my nucs have a newly mated and laying queen that has been caged with an auto released candy cork, 1/3 of my nucs are overwintered and are packaged with an uncaged queen actively laying from the mother colony.The outside of the nuc box has each option clearly labeled.In your case you called when you arrived home and I made the suggestion to bring it back if you'd like the other option; you then proceeded to install it and have queen problems. I provided a second queen to you for free a few weeks later. Regardless of caged or uncaged queens there is a very high success rate with the nucs i sell. The queens are caged daily and introduced to the newly made up nucs quickly. This is an industry wide standard.
