A truly inspiring and important story of conservation, right before your eyes, where it happened and continues to thrive.

I visited this place this past summer, having recently read a few of Aldo Leopolds works including A Sand County Almanac. Despite there being an interstate highway not much more than a mile away, the trees and plants were really absorbing the sound, and it was extremely quiet and peaceful here. Aldo Leopolds cabin wasnt open when I visited, but it was still cool to view it from the outside. There were a few trails behind the cabin that lead to the Wisconsin River. The rivers banks consisted almost completely of sand, which is very bizarre for Wisconsin, but thats why Aldo Leopold named this area Sand County.

A wonderful place! My wife and I visited briefly to attend programs that were part of the Great Midwest Crane Festival and will be back to learn more about Aldo Leopold's life and legacy. As soon as we got home, I checked out "A Sand County Almanac" from our public library. All Wisconsinites (and all Americans) who care about conservation should read it.
